The New Year, 2014, will soon arrive and not too soon for me. The old year was not a good one in many ways. I'm ready for a change. The beginning, with the publication of my MG novel looks promising. I proudly show you the lovely cover, by Illustrator Aidana WillowRaven.

Publisher: 4 RV Publishing
A girl.
A dream.
An accident.
A dream shattered.
Ten-year-old Kate Taylor dreams of being the star of her basketball team, Angels. When Kate’s tooth is knocked out at one of the games, and her mother, who is also her coach, says she can’t play until the tooth the dentist replants heals, Kate’s dreams are in jeopardy. Add Emily, the new girl at school who claims she’s the best, and Kate faces a challenge to prove that she is the star.
Will Kate succeed? Or will Emily ruin Kate’s plans?

Short summary:

Ten-year-old Kate Taylor wants to be the star of her basketball team, Angels, but when her tooth is knocked out at one of the games, her goal is in jeopardy. Even though the dentist replants the tooth, her mother, who is also her coach, refuses to let Kate play unless she can come up with a way to protect the tooth.

With the encouragement of her friends and teammates, Kate tries everything. She asks her sister, Zoe, how her boyfriend, Ray, protects his teeth when playing football. Zoe is clueless. Kate wears her friend Simon’s catcher’s mask to practice, but it’s too big and blocks her view of the goal. Kate stuffs cotton balls in her mouth and thinks she’s swallowed one. Nothing works.

To add to Kate’s problems, Emily, the new girl at River Bend Elementary, is great at basketball. Kate worries Emily will be the star of the team. On top of that, Simon, the school brain, as well as klutz, says he plans to join the Angels, even though boys are not allowed.

In the final game of the season, Kate faces a decision that will not only decide who wins the game, but whether she’s star of the team or not.

Watch for the release of the book sometimes in January. I'll post buy links as soon as I have them.

Another Friday has arrived. What a week this has been. Such excitement and fun, with family and friends. I hope everyone had the Christmas you wished for. So today, for Fun Friday, share with us the funnest (I know that's not a word, indulge me) thing you did or the gift that was the most fun. Here are mine:

Being with my grandkids, great grands, and of course their parents.

Yes, we ate a lot.
The funnest gift was the remote control helicopter I gave my great-grandson. And I did not get a picture of it. It was fun to watch anyhow.
Rest and relax now.

I'm painting today and having fun. Awhile back we had a water leak and it ruined part of my floor and stained the walls. My son fixed the floor and now we're painting the walls. They needed a brighter color anyhow. They're now a lovely soft yellow, at least part of them. Some cracks need patching and soon the living and dining areas will be beautiful.

I'm also watching the birds eat the seeds I put out. It's cold today, and they are really hungry. Some of you have seen these pictures; I put them on Face Book. Enjoy.

This is the little guy that flew into the window and I brought him in the house, put him in the cat carrier (I bet he loved that) and waited to see if he'd be okay. When he started climbing the walls of the carrier, trying to escape, I knew he'd survive. Opened the door and out he flew.
So, what are you doing for fun this Friday?
Have a nice weekend.
Happy Reading.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. As you rush around doing your last minute shopping, remember that books make ideal gifts for your young friends and family members. I'd like to recommend a couple that are winners.

Eight-year-old Robert is eager to share his wish list with Santa at the mall on Christmas Eve. When he meets Glenn, who has only one request for Santa, Robert is confused over what he should do. Can he cast aside what he wants and ask Santa to bring his new friend a special gift?

Obed is in the hills outside Bethlehem when the angels appear to announce the Savior's birth. Can he trust that the miracle of the first Christmas will keep his flock safe while he visits the newborn King?

Ahoy there, mateys. Welcome aboard.
What people are saying.
`A Pirate, a Blockade Runner, and a Cat' has something of everything for teens that like action, mystery, pirates, and real ghosts. I love the fact how Beverly Stowe McClure has very cleverly inserted nautical and pirate facts in her story that at the same time reflect Eric's inner chaos of his father's betrayal and his longing for his old life while being presented with the most electrifying new life which even offers some of the comforts of the old, like baseball. Antje Hergt
Talented in the areas of contemporary and historical fiction, I am always amazed by how diverse McClure's ideas are while staying true to her fan base. A Pirate, a Blockade Runner, and a Cat should be another big winner for her. Why? Because in a nutshell, no matter what she is writing, she knows what relates well to her readers. Cheryl C. Malandrinos
I thought Erik was a great main character. He is a very believable 13-year-old and I really wanted him to get a solution to his problem. I love the unique plot of the book, that the kids help out some ghosts and in return the ghosts help Erik. That makes this book a very different kind of ghost story. This Kid Reviews Books
Happy Reading.

The Buzz

"Through the storytelling of Beverly Stowe McClure and the book illustrations of Bridget McKenna, the reader is drawn to feel the pain of poverty and choices that must be made due to economic circumstance. We are drawn into Jackie's world by her giving spirit and root for her every word of the way. And when all is said and done ... We, too, believe in the miracle of a Tumbleweed Christmas. Timely for the season and its reason, but also gives us reason to keep the Spirit of Christmas alive year 'round." ~ 5 Star Review, Ruth C., Amazon

"I can't think of a sweeter tale of the season than Tumbleweed Christmas." ~ 5 Star Review, Cheryl M., Amazon

"This is a delightful 24 page book which shows the reader about selflessness. Many parent's give up much to make things work when they don't have a lot of money, and being creative is certainly a key in such situations. Jackie gave up what was dear to her the most to be able to give gifts to her family so they had something to open on Christmas day. In many ways, gift giving has gone out of control. The most expensive items are not necessarily the best. Sometimes it's the handmade items or drawings that come from the heart that are truly memorable. A gift from the heart is what truly matters most, and it doesn't have to be much. Children and parent's alike will enjoy this story because it touches upon one of the best gifts in the world that we can give--LOVE!" ~ 5 Star Review, Children's Book Reviewer, Amazon

Beverly Stowe McClure is a former teacher turned writer. When she was a kid, writing was the last thing on her mind. She loved music and played clarinet in the junior high and high school bands. She also was a majorette. She still plays the piano to relax. Her cats don’t appreciate good music, however, and run and hide when she tickles the ivories.

She lives in the country with Patches and Tiger (the cats), along with a variety of wild critters that stop by for a handout. Next to her sons, grandchildren, and great-grands, writing is her passion and joy. She also enjoys researching her family roots and snapping pictures of clouds, flowers, deer and birds, especially the roadrunner that visits on occasion and the hummingbirds that she feeds.

Please grab a cup of coffee or your favorite drink, find a comfy chair, and join me today to see what Award Winning Author Darby Karchut and her character FINN FINNEGAN have been up to.

The inspiration behind Finn Finnegan

I am often asked: why Celtic mythology? Well, my undergraduate degree is in anthropology, so my fascination with world cultures and myths goes way back. But it was a chance comment from my sister (who travels to Africa every year) about so-called “fairy rings” found in the African bush. The local people said they were created by magical beings. I started researching fairy rings, which led me first to Ireland, then the Tuatha De Danaan, and finally to the legend of Fionn mac Cumhail. And thus, The Adventures of Finn MacCullen were born. Plus, I come from Irish stock; hence my first name, which is an old family name on my father’s side.

But my real inspiration comes from my students. I have always written for older elementary and middle school boys. Since I teach 7th grade (social studies), I am constantly surrounded by this age. I wanted to give my boys a hero their own age they can measure themselves against as well as an adult male hero they can emulate.

I am such a fortunate author, for there is not a day goes by that I don’t see a copy of my book in the hands of one of my students. What a gift.

What a treat to visit with everyone today. Please don’t hesitate to ask me questions or make a comment. I’ll be stopping by throughout the day.

Finn Finnegan by Darby Karchut
(The Adventures of Finn MacCullen #1)
Published by: Spencer Hill Press
Publication date: March 12th 2013
Genres: Fantasy, Middle-Grade

Finnegan MacCullen: a thirteen-year-old apprentice with the famous Irish temperament.
Gideon Lir: a legendary Celtic warrior with a bit of a temper of his own.

Secretly, these blue-collar warriors battle the hobgoblins infesting their suburban neighborhood…when they are not battling each other.

Finn (not bleedin’ Finnegan) MacCullen is eager to begin his apprenticeship. He soon discovers the ups and downs of hunting monsters in a suburban neighborhood under the demanding tutelage of the Knight, Gideon Lir. Both master and apprentice are descendents of the Tuatha De Danaan, a magical race of warriors from Ireland. Scattered long ago to the four corners of the world, the De Danaan wage a two thousand year old clandestine battle with their ancient enemy, the Amandán, a breed of goblin-like creatures.

Now with the beasts concentrating their attacks on Finn, he and his master must race to locate the lost Spear of the Tuatha De Danaan, the only weapon that can destroy the Amandán, all the while hiding his true identity from his new friends, Rafe and Savannah, twins whose South African roots may hold a key to Finn’s survival.

Armed with a bronze dagger, some ancient Celtic magic, and a hair-trigger temper, Finn is about to show his enemies the true meaning of “fighting Irish.”

All her life, the archetypal hero and his journey have enthralled Darby Karchut. A native of New Mexico, Darby grew up in a family that venerated books and she spent her childhood devouring one fantasy novel after another. Fascinated by mythologies from around the world, she attended the University of New Mexico, graduating with a degree in anthropology. After moving to Colorado, she then earned a Master’s in education and became a social studies teacher.

Drawing from her extensive knowledge of world cultures, she blends ancient myths with modern urban life to write stories that relate to young teens today.

Darby is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the Pikes Peak Writers Guild. She lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with her husband, where she still teaches social studies at a local junior high school. She enjoys running, biking, and skiing the Rocky Mountains in all types of weather.

Her debut middle grade book, Finn Finnegan, released March 2013 (Spencer Hill Press). The next book in the series, Gideon's Spear (Spencer Hill Press), will be released February 2014. Her YA books include Griffin Rising (2011 Sharp Writ YA Book of the Year), Griffin's Fire, and Griffin's Storm.

Book 2 in the series will be out in February, 2014. I'm looking forward to seeing what other mischief, umm, adventures Finn has in store for us.

I'm delighted to host April Bostic today on her Blog Tour for her novel The Howling Heart.
The Howling Heart Book Summary:
Paige Donovan is an ambitious college graduate who aspires to reach the top of the corporate ladder. She’s climbing fast when given the promotion of a lifetime at a prestigious fashion magazine in New York City. Her bright future comes to an unexpected halt after news of her father’s death. She inherits his old cabin in the Colorado Rockies, and just when she thinks her luck couldn’t get any worse, she has a car accident in the mountains and awakens in the small, remote community of Black River.

Soon, she’s engulfed in the mystical world of Varulv---wolves descended from 13th century Scandinavia and blessed by Norse gods with the ability to appear human. Paige is desperate to return home, but never expects to fall for her rescuer, Riley Gray, a charming young werewolf from England who offers her an alternate future with his pack.

Now, she must choose between the career she’s always wanted and the love she’s always dreamed.

My Review:
Sometimes, incidents that happen to us when we’re children stay with us the rest of our lives. We may put them aside as we grow older and not think about them, until something triggers a memory. Then it all returns, fear or pleasant memories, depending on the remembered experience.

In Author April Bostic’s paranormal romance novel, THE HOWLING HEART, Paige has an encounter with wolves, one of them white, when she’s ten years old. She also sees a naked boy. As an adult, Paige works at Elle, a fashion magazine, and has a two-timing boyfriend. When her father passes away and leaves her their cabin in Black River, Colorado, where she met the white wolf as a child, she decides to return to the cabin for a while. The people in Black River are not what they seem. Who is Riley, a young man who looks like a god? What secrets is he keeping? And what about his twin sister, Quinn? Paige soon must make choices, choices that could mean life or death for herself and the new friends she has made at Black River.

I don’t want to give anything away about the story, but THE HOWLING HEART gives interesting details about the origins of the wolves in Black River. There’s romance, along with some steamy scenes that I skimmed through. (Not my normal kind of reading.)The language is rough at times, so I’m warning you in case you aren’t fond of bad words. I skimmed them as well, perhaps because I write for children and teens. The characters are well developed, some likable, others good villains. The ending surprised me, and I had hoped for something different. Still, it makes sense, and you may think it’s just right. The author has written a story that will keep you turning pages for sure, seldom a dull moment.

I was given an ebook copy of this book for my honest review.

Now for my dream destination. It's probably a lot different to most of your ideas of the perfect place to go. For me, it's just right. I would like to visit the place where my mother was born: the tenements of Brooklyn, NY. While there, I'd learn as much as I could about her family and see if any of them or their descendants still live.
I'd also go to North Carolina where my father's family came from. I know there are a bunch of Stowe people still there. Perhaps some are my kin. I'd love to see the area where my ancestors lived before they moved to Tennessee and then Texas.
Yes, I'm a genealogy nut. Love the old stories. Learning how the people lived day by day brings history alive.
That's my Dream Destination.
Looking forward to reading about others.

The Buzz

"Kudos to Ms. de Montigny for writing an original variation on the fantasy epic--unicorns intermingling with dinosaurs! The book's themes include the humane and environmental concerns that Watership Down and the films of Hayao Miyazaki have in common. If you have a middle grader or are just young at heart, pick up The Shadow Of The Unicorn." ~ 5 Star Review, Stuart W., Amazon
"The Shadow of the Unicorn is a must-read for all unicorn lovers, but even more so for the ones, like my self, who hadn't read anything about them yet. It is a thrilling and encouraging story about a young unicorn that has to save his herd after a meteor nearly destroyed their environment and killed the dinosaurs. Suzanne de Montigny created a compelling universe with believable characters and a great adventure story to challenge them with. While the story finishes in this book, I can't wait to read about the new adventures the unicorns will face.." ~ 5 Star Review, Antje H., Amazon
"This story pulled me in with a beautiful portrayal of a time and place where unicorns and dinosaurs live side by side. It moved me forward with unexpected twist and turns (a requirement in any good story). I found it hard to put the book down and was totally engaged in seeing the young characters (unicorns and dinosaurs) survive and grow because of the challenges they faced." ~ 5 Star Review, NW Harris, Amazon
"I just finished reading The Shadow of the Unicorn. What a story teller Suzanne de Montigny is. She combined unicorns with dinosaurs and spun a tail of magic that kept me turning the pages, not to mention throwing in an evil that came in the form of a human! What an enjoyable story - and here I thought these mystic animals were extinct. I just didn't know what to look for!" ~ 5 Star Review, Penny E., Amazon
"What a delightfully unique book. Unicorns and dinosaurs facing changing conditions. Darius is a young dinosaur capable of seeing the future. Azaria is a young unicorn who becomes a friend and learns from Darius. Yes, there are humans in this book. They are the villains of the story. Greedy beasts. I think both boys and girls will love this story. Very quick paced and easy to read. A delightful story, and I look forward to more from this author." ~ 5 Star Review, DM Lawrence, Amazon
