Lately I've read a few books about gods and goddesses. Here's another one that I really enjoyed.

THE DIG: Zoe and Zeus

The Review:

Most people’s lives are fairly routine: school, work, entertainment, family. Even if we’re a bit of a rebel and like to break the rules, there is a pattern to each day. But what if our world suddenly changes? What if we meet unusual creatures and find ourselves in another time, another place? I don’t know about you, but I’d want to get back home, to my life. Of course this would be after I freaked out and went a little crazy at first.

In Audrey Hart’s debut novel, The Dig: Zoe and Zeus, Zoe, the misfit at school, spends the summer with her aunt and uncle, geologists, in Greece, where they discover an ancient temple that promises an exciting summer for Zoe. Little does she know just how weird the next few weeks will be. The first clue is a seven-foot-tall iPhone leaning against the wall of a mystery room in the temple. And that’s just the beginning. Zoe’s summer is one to write about, if anyone would believe her. She learns a lot about herself and also about the gorgeous guy she calls “Blondie,” as he calls her “Curly.” You’ll have to read the book to find out why. Floods, tornadoes, fires, and the gods that live on Mount Olympus challenge Zoe as she faces each obstacle, sometimes with courage, other times with doubt and fear.

If you like Greek Mythology, I think you’ll enjoy Audrey Hart’s novel. Humor, romance, danger, and likeable characters make The Dig an interesting story. This book is the first of a trilogy. Mythology stories are new to me, and I’m really enjoying learning about the gods and goddesses. I’m looking forward to reading the next installment.

THE CLOCKWORK GIANT Review

Today I have another debut novel I think you'll want to add to your TBR list. The Clockwork Giant by Brooke Johnson.

The Review

Are you fascinated with machinery? Do gears intrigue you? Or are you like me, and your eyes glaze over when anyone talks about mechanics because you don’t understand how they work?

Whichever category describes you, you’ll learn a lot about machinery from Author Brooke Johnson’s debut novel The Clockwork Giant. Ms. Johnson explains in simple language that even I can understand the details of the project that our heroine, Petra Wade, and the university student and boy she comes to like, Emmerich Goss, are building. We travel back in time to 1860s England, a time when girls had few rights and Petra’s dream of being an engineer was just that - only a dream. She’s an orphan and lives in the slums. She sweeps the pawn shop, until one day, she meets Emmerich, and her life changes forever. They team up to build an automaton that might possibly save the world, or else destroy it. If she is discovered working with him, Emmerich will be marked for treason and Petra for death. The Clockwork Giant is a story of mystery, determination, and love between a boy and girl from different backgrounds. Will they succeed in making the world a better place in which to live, or will The Guild stop them?

It took me awhile to get into the story, but once I did, I couldn’t stop reading. The Clockwork Giant introduced me to a period in history that I wasn’t familiar with. The ending left me wanting to know more. The good news is that Petra and Emmerich‘s story will continue. The next book in The Chroniker City Series will be out in the winter of 2012. I’m looking forward to learning what happens next. Can our heroine overcome the obstacles that await her and Emmerich? Ms. Johnson’s book would make a good addition to high school libraries where students could experience a time in history quite different from the one they live in.

The Book of Lost Fragrances (Review)

This is the first book by M. J. Rose that I've read and I hope to read more. Here are my thoughts.

The Book of Lost Frangrances
By M. J. Rose

Do you enjoy a bit of history and a touch of mystery? Or do Buddas and the Dalai Lama fascinate you? Is mythology and reincarnation more to your taste? Or do Cleopatra and perfume intrigue you? Oh, and there’s also the ghost. What if you could find all of these in one story? Well, you can.

The Book of Lost Fragrances, a novel by author M. J. Rose, takes the reader from Egypt to New York, from China to France, and from the past to the present with a cast of characters you won’t soon forget. There are way too many to mention them all here, so I won’t even try. At first I wondered how the different people would fit together. The Book of Lost Fragrances is the story of Jac L’Etoile and her brother, Robbie, who is searching for the Fragrance of Memory. Then Robbie goes missing and it seems others are interested in pottery fragments that could be proof of reincarnation. The story gets even more complicated as Jac and her former lover, Griffin, attempt to find Robbie.

In alternating chapters we meet the other characters, sometimes traveling centuries back, as the author ties each of them into Jac and Robbie’s story. At times, the switch from one time and setting to another interrupted the story that I was following. It was necessary, I guess, to bring in the background for Jac and Robbie’s story. I enjoyed the read and recommend Ms. Rose’s latest for lovers of adventure, history, and even romance.

The Neat Thing About Critique Groups

I belong to two critique groups: "The Dabbling Muse" and "Silverweb." They're both quite different. Yet they're the same. They're the same because we read each other's works in progress and give comments. These are our individual opinions of what works in the story and what doesn't, of course. Many times, however, two or more readers will notice similar comments on one sentence, paragraph, or even a whole scene. When this happens to me, I study the suggesstions carefully and then it's clear where I went wrong.

Both groups are the same in that we try to help each other make our work the best that it can be. And you as writers know that you can miss important details because you're so close to the story. Others are able to pick up on what the writer overlooks. I take the suggesstions of my critique partners very seriously. No, I don't use all of their ideas, but at least they help me see the direction I should be going.

One of the neatest things about my critique groups, both of them, is the fact that when I'm reading their stories, I find some of the same mistakes they've made I've also made in my work. Eye opener there. So by critiquing others, I'm also critiquing myself in a way, when I realize I use the word "and" five times in one paragraph, or when I "tell" the story rather than "show" it like I'm reminding my crit partners to do.

They're different in the way we post our work. One group has a set schedule; the other is whenever you have something you need help with.

I love you, great writers: Linda, Kai, Nancy, Norma, Cheryl, Beth, and Terre. Without you I'd be hopeless. Write on, ladies.

The Princess of Las Pulgas Review

You know, I keep reading such great books that I think they can't get any better. Then along comes one that does. Recently, I was fortunate to win a copy of C. Lee. McKenzie's latest novel, The Princess of Las Pulgas. Okay. You gotta read it too. In the meantime, here's my review.

If you’ve ever lost a family member, you know how devastating it is and how your whole life changes. Then, if circumstances cause you to have to leave the home you’ve grown up in and live in a new place totally different to what you’re used to, it’s understandable that you’ll be bitter and hate your new life. At least at first.

Author C. Lee McKenzie’s latest novel for young adults, The Princess of Las Pulgas, deals with such a situation. When Carlie Edmund’s father dies, she loses not only the father that she loves but also her home and her friends. Unable to afford their expensive beach house any longer, Carlie’s mother sells it and they move to Las Pulgas, the worst place in the universe Carlie can imagine living. Even the cat, Quicken, is upset and runs away. Carlie and her younger brother, Keith, also have to attend a new school where Juan, the boy with the big smile, gives her the nickname Princess because he says she acts like royalty. Carlie has a lot to learn about the students in her new school as well as her old friends from Channing. And along the way little whispers in her heart remind Carlie of advice her father gave her. To me, these whispers show how close Carlie and her father were and how she is hurting for him.

Ms. McKenzie has written a touching story about love and loss, family and friends, and how we can misjudge people when we don’t really know them. This book would make a great addition to school libraries to help students that may be going through a situation similar to Carlie’s and also for your own personal library.

What Was I Thinking?

Last summer, when the temperature was 100 degrees plus day after day, a little gray cat came into my life. I didn't want him. I had Patches, my calico, that appeared on the patio six years ago. She was sweet and I loved her. No more cats. They were trouble. They were expensive (vet bills and food).

Well, little gray had other ideas. He stayed on the patio except during the heat of the day when he went to the barn for the shade. He was so skinny, I started feeding him. He wouldn't hang around for long, I thought, and I couldn't watch him starve.

One thing led to another and before I knew it, Tiger, yes I named him, was in the house. Over the years we've taken in many throw away cats, but Tiger is one of the sweetest cats to own us. He's also sick. Visits to the vet, a strict diet, and lots of love I hope will cure him. Patches is less than friendly, and he just puts up with her. Maybe they'll be friends one day.

I don't know why, but I just needed to write about Tiger today. Here he is:

Destined amd Through the Portal

The Review:

Take a boy, a girl, and a mother who wants to see them married. Mix. And you have a typical romance story, right? Well, sometimes. Other times you have romance, sure, but also adventure, sister rivalry, mortals, gods, and betrayals.

Author Jessie Harrell’s debut novel, Destined, has romance all right. It also contains much more. The boy, Eros, is a god. The girl, Psyche, is a mortal. Aphrodite, the mother of Eros, has chosen Psyche to serve as her daughter and also to marry her son. There are problems from the start, however. The two would-be lovers are strongly opposed to the marriage and make their feelings known. What’s a poor mother to do? Will Aphrodite find a new bride for her son? Will she punish Psyche for her unacceptable behavior regarding Eros? As the story unfolds, the reader follows the characters, sometimes wanting to shake them, other times wondering if the two lovers’ fates are destined or if they can change the future, at least these were the thoughts of this reader. Every time I thought I had it all figured out, the story would take a turn and introduce something totally unexpected, and I had to keep reading to see how the new developments worked out.

Now I know very little about mythology and gods and goddesses, but I loved Eros and Psyche, even though they weren’t always nice which made them more interesting, and I so wanted them to find happiness. Jessie Harrell raised the tension with each page, keeping the reader guessing what would happen next. She also threw in a couple of twists along the way, so I never was quite sure what to expect next. Whether you’re new to mythology, like me, or know all about the gods and goddesses, I think you’ll enjoy reading Destined. It’s a story well worth your time.

Some kids get teased a lot at school. Some kids defend those that are teased. Friendship is a beautiful thing. Everyone needs a friend they can depend on.

In Justin Dennis’s debut novel, Through the Portal, we meet Jem Surwae and Oliver Pautelle. Jem is poor and often the victim of the bullies at school. He isn’t looking forward to entering high school next year. Oliver lives in a mansion and takes up for Jem.

On the last day of school, at 1 AM, the boys decide to go scuba diving. When they discover a hole in the bottom of the lake, their whole lives change and they’re soon on an adventure that takes them through a portal to another world. A 4-foot tall man, a giant bear, and Red Dragons are just the beginning. The boys meet sisters, Sierra and Rimaya, who use magic even though the Regime has outlawed magic for the people. Jem and Oliver want to help fight the Regime before they take control and kill everyone opposed to them, but they soon find themselves in big trouble. You’ll have to read the book to find out how, or if, they succeed in their goals.

Likeable characters and interesting encounters with unusual creatures in a fantasy world make for a fast read. The author has written a story that will appeal to fantasy lovers who like characters with spunk. This is the first book in a trilogy, so join in the fun and follow Jem and Oliver on their travels. I believe Justin Dennis has a promising future in writing ahead of him.

How would you like to attend a school with brownies that don’t like to be seen by humans or with a ghost called six-toed Sam? What if you took flying lessons on a horse, and a mysterious Ice Queen seemed to be watching you? Sound intriguing? Add the discovery of a girl’s body, drained of blood, and a bully named Ophelia, and you enter the lives of three young characters determined to solve the mysteries surrounding them. And these are just for starters. You’ll also encounter more unusual happenings at the Borealis Academy of Magical Arts. So come on in and see what adventures await you.

Author Debra K. Dunlap’s novel for tween/teen readers is a fantasy story about Fallon O’Reilly, who, along with her cousin Ardis and friend Eddie, meet some weird creatures in their quest to get an education. The Alaskan setting with its snow and mountains is the perfect place for the story to unfold. From the opening scene with the birth of the babe “born with the mark,” to meeting the professors of their new school, to being attacked by an odd creature, the children’s experiences are anything but dull. The author takes the reader on a fantastic journey through unexplored places in the school as the kids learn more about the people and creatures inhabiting it.

A helpful glossary at the end of the book explains Latin words, Alaskan words, and others. Fallon O’Reilly and the Ice Queen’s Lair has many similarities to the Harry Potter books, but the Alaskan setting and the characters with their own unique personalities have a story to tell and they tell it very well. The book should appeal to fantasy lovers, young and old, and make a nice addition to school classrooms and libraries.

Rock Bound by Rochelle Weber

The Review:

Imagine the U. S. Constitution being repealed. Imagine going to Washington DC to protest to have the Constitution restored and have free elections, but soldiers fire on you and you’re soon under arrest, accused of treason. Sounds terrifying, right? Could it happen?

This is exactly what happens in Author Rochelle Weber’s novel, Rock Bound. The year is 2051. Annie Peterson and her husband Paul leave their baby boy with Annie’s mother in California and set off across the country to take part in the protest even though they realize chances are good they’ll be arrested. They cannot visualize the horror that awaits them, however. Many of the protesters are killed. Annie and others that survive are sent to the moon where they’ll be indentured for ten years to the Freezeland Mining Corporation as punishment. Even after completing their sentence they must pay their way back to Earth, which is highly unlikely. Now I’ve never thought much about what life on the moon would be like. The author, however, paints a vivid picture of the hardships and trials the prisoners face in their new world. They have to grow their own food. No supermarkets exist where they can shop for bread and milk. At first they eat a lot of A-Rats. When a second wave of prisoners arrives, Annie and the new friends she’s made learn that the people on Earth want their constitution restored so fighting is still going on and the supplies they need likely will not arrive. Add a meteor that causes damage and death to their group and you have a story with constant action that makes the reader wonder if they will survive in this new world. Will they ever return home to the families left behind? Or is the moon their forever home?

The author goes into great detail about what the characters must do to survive on the moon. It’s fascinating. How much of the facts are accurate I do not know, but Ms. Weber has written a story that held my attention. I think you will enjoy it, as well.

Spurs for Jose Review

Historical fiction novels are some of my favorite stories. Recently, I read Wanda Snow Porter's YA novel Spurs for Jose and would like to share it with you. Here's a little about Wanda from her Website: I grew up on a small farm roaming the hills and riding horses along the California Coast, attended school in a nearby town, then married and stayed in this friendly community to raise a family. As a docent for the Dana Adobe, I help school kids experience what life was like 150 years ago on an Alta California rancho.

The Review:

Many times I forget about the brave men, women, and children that settled our land. They suffered hardships we can only imagine, but because of the bravery of the people before us, America is the great nation that it is today.

In author Wanda Snow Porter’s novel, Spurs for Jose, the reader travels back in time with twelve-year-old Jose Rodriquez as he faces one challenge after another on the way to becoming a vaquero and taming the wild horses like his father and brothers. The year is 1846 and when Jose’s father tells him it’s time for Jose to ride the young colts, Jose is excited, but he also wonders if he has the courage that he needs to follow after his father.

The author takes us on a journey that will appeal to the adventurous nature in young and old alike. Through Jose, we learn how to tame a wild horse the way the vaqueros did years ago. Since I love horses and we once owned several quarter horses, I found this especially interesting. Jose and the other characters are well developed, revealing their desires and bravery, along with their doubts and their fears. Spurs for Jose would make a good addition to classroom libraries for information on American history.

All Sorts of Good News

Happy Monday. I hope your weekend was exactly what you wanted it to be. Today, I have a couple of exciting announcements to share with you.

First, my publisher Twilight Times Books is listed in the top 100 publishers for 2012 in Writers Digest. I'm so happy for Lida Quillen. She has workd hard to publish great books and to get the word out about them to readers. Congratulations, Lida. I'm glad to be one of your authors.

Second, last summer I posted a review of The Pineville Heist by Lee Chambers. (I've reposted it below in case you missed reading it.) Anyway, Lee has great news. Actor Booboo Stewart (Breaking Dawn) is on board to take on the lead role of Aaron Stevens in the movie. How exciting is that. You can learn more at Lee's Website.

The Review

Take a wealthy, seventeen-year-old kid with an attitude, a robbery, and cops with secrets, add missing bodies, a pretty teacher who may or may not be involved in the crime, stir, and you have an adventure story with twists and turns that will keep you guessing who the bad guys are until the end.

In Author Lee Chambers’ novel, The Pineville Heist, seventeen-year-old Aaron Stevens accidentally finds a backpack from PINEVILLE SAVINGS AND LOAN full of stolen money. When he hears Tremblay, Sheriff of Pineville, and Officer Carl discussing how someone got away with four to five million dollars, Aaron decides to return the money with the help of his friends. Well, the boys have good intentions, but they encounter major problems on the way to do their good deed. Soon Aaron, Mike, and Steve are running for their lives, pursued by a gunman determined to kill them. Aaron escapes to the school where more killing is going on, and a battle ensues between Aaron and one of the robbers. I’m not saying who because that would give away the story. However, the timid boy who was afraid to shoot a deer when he was a child, now faces a choice: kill or be killed. Will Aaron find the courage to not only protect himself but his teacher, Amanda, as well?

Readers that like a fast-paced action story will enjoy The Pineville Heist. If you’re a bit squeamish, there are dead bodies, gunfights, and some bloody scenes. This novel is better suited for older teens, 14 and up. I did have a problem with the change in point of view so often. I can see why Mr. Chambers wrote the story this way because so many characters are involved. Maybe space breaks would have warned the reader that we were in a new character’s thoughts. The Pineville Heist is a good story about a young man who faces more challenges in life than most teens and how he deals with the changes in his life. Lady In Waiting, an historical romance, was released in November and Mirror, Mirror, a time-travel romance releases in December. She wants to let my readers know that she's holding a contest. I wanted to talk today about the art of scrying. In Mirror, Mirror, a wise woman uses her special scrying mirror to local Lindsey Baker in the twenty-first century. Lindsey looks exactly like Prudence, a young girl who is in love with Master Graham. Unfortunately, Graham cannot marry Prudence because she is the baker’s daughter. Graham’s father insists he has to marry a young woman with more influence and money and thus has arranged a marriage for him with the burgher’s daughter.
Lindsey purchases a mirror which the shopkeeper jokingly tells her is a scrying mirror. Through this mirror, Lindsey is transported back to the fifteen century where she is given the task of convincing Graham that he must marry Prudence.
Scrying is the ancient art of divination achieved by a person of talent focusing on an object with a shiny surface until visions appear.

The term scrying comes from the English word “descry.” This is defined as “to see,” “to make out dimly” or “to reveal.” Scryers were sought by people who wanted to know about their future, or needed answers to questions, solutions to problems, or help in finding lost items or people. During the Middle Ages when scrying was popular, most scryers were wise women or wise men who were sometimes referred to as witches. These people were naturally gifted with second sight.

We usually think of scryers using crystal balls, but crystal balls were expensive, and not many scyers could afford them. Many of the early scryers used ponds or lakes on moonlit nights. They also used mirrors, polished stones or metal, or bowls of water.

Mirrors which are used are generally painted black on the concave side. Witches may make the magic mirrors themselves, painting and decorating them during the waxing moon and then consecrating them in traditional rituals used for other witches tools.

Traditionally, a witch uses a magic circle to work her scrying. The best results are obtained at night. The witch will concentrate upon her chosen tool and will be rewarded with visions either on the surface of the tool or by receiving mental images. To be able to scry, the witch needs to turn off all distractions and enter an altered state of consciousness. Some ancient grimoires indicate a great deal of preparation was necessary for the witch to perform a scrying. Some of the steps included fasting, prayers, and summoning various spirits. They would definitely have to do a psychic cleansing of both themselves and the area where they would be scrying.

First the person scrying will quiet her mind, relax and concentrate on the reflective surface. Keeping her mind blank, the witch will look within the glass, ignoring reflections or light on the surface. Sinking into the glass, the witch forms a question in her mind. The glass will appear to cloud over, become smoky, and a dark patch appears. At this point, pictures, signs or other symbols that the witch must interpret will appear in the glass.

Prudence approached the wise woman in Mirror, Mirror to learn what she could do to make Graham go against his father’s wishes. When Lindsey is brought through time, Prudence disappears. Mirror, Mirror doesn’t follow Prudence to see where she goes, but I’ll let you know that her spirit is inhabiting Lindsey’s body in the twenty-first century while Lindsey’s spirit is trapped in Prudence’s.

“Today’s the day, Mabriona,” Princess Alana said as Mabriona entered the chambers. She wiped tears from her eyes with an embroidered linen. “Prince Blayne will be here, and soon I’ll be his wife. I think the worst part of being father’s daughter is marrying someone I’ve never even met.”

“You’ve always known your marriage would be arranged for the benefit of the kingdom, Princess, but I’m sure he’ll be very nice,” Mabriona replied as she opened the heavy drapes covering the windows. She looked at her cousin and sighed. She wanted to feel sorry for Alana, but they’d had this discussion so many times. Mabriona was tired of it. Alana had known from the time she was a child that she would not wed for love. Why can’t Alana just accept her fate? Outside the day was as wet as the one before and the one before that.

“Nice? Who wants nice? I want someone handsome and dashing. A knight in shining armor who will love me forever. I certainly don’t want someone like my father who will make me do everything I don’t want to do.”

MIRROR, MIRROR

After Stefany left, Lindsey adjusted the water spigots on her tub. A few drops of bubble bath went into the water, and the soothing scent of lavender filled the moist, steamy air. While the tub filled, Lindsey tried on her Renaissance outfit for the upcoming Faire. She couldn’t believe her good luck at finding the perfect pieces. She tested the bath water to be sure it was the right temperature. Then she picked up her antique mirror to get a better view. Was this a scryer’s mirror at some point in time? It slipped from her wet hands into the bathtub.

“Nuts,” she mumbled as she leaned over the tub. She pulled one sleeve up on her blouse and fished around in the bubbles for the mirror. When she pulled the mirror from the water, spots appeared in front of her eyes, and she felt faint. While she watched her reflection in the old mirror, the background changed. She no longer saw the inside of her bathroom. She closed her eyes as the room around her went black.

Interview With Griffin

A while back I reviewed Griffin Rising, Darby Karchut's debut novel for teens and one of my favorite books of 2011. Today, it is my pleasure to interview the main character, Griffin. Now remember, he is a teen and teens have their own way of looking at life, as I was gently reminded the other day by the young man who carried my groceries to the car. Griffin is also a guardian angel in training. And now, Griffin has a word or two for us.

Uh...thanks, Mrs. McClure.

Your story fascinates me. I believe there are angels among us, and you are proof that it’s true. So what is a Terrae Angeli exactly?

Well, Terrae Angeli are guardians for humans. Like celestial angels in a way, except we are a lot more down to earth. In fact, that’s what Terrae Angeli means in Latin: earth angels. And we are more like humans than angels. We look and act like mortals. We have free will. We can get hurt or even killed on missions. And we like and dislike the same stuff as most people.

There are two kinds of Terrae Angeli: Earth & Fire and Wind & Water. I’m an Earth and Fire angel. That means I can harness the power of earth and fire to help me on rescue missions. My Mentor, Basil, is a Wind and Water angel.

First, you are a Tiro, the lowest rank of Terrae Angeli. What must you do to reach the higher ranks?

You’re right, Mrs. McClure. The Tiro is the lowest level, followed by Mentor, then Guardian, then Sage. A Tiro is an apprentice to a Mentor. Basil once said it’s like a knight and squire type of relationship. When I turn sixteen, I have this trial-by-combat test called the Proelium. Once I pass it, I’m on my way to completing my apprenticeship.
Basil is your second mentor. What happened with your first, Nicopolis?

I don’t like talking about him. Heck, I don’t even like THINKING about him. He used to beat the crap out of me. But then I got re-assigned to Basil. Talk about total opposites!

So how’s it going with Basil?

Awesome! I’ve learned so much from him. He uses our missions to teach me more advanced Element control as well as using my Might. Plus he’s pretty cool, except when he’s doing the whole Mentor thing. Then he’s a pain in the rear. He’s always on me about my manners and being a gentleman. Blah, blah, blah. (Um...don’t tell him I said that, okay?)

But he did rescue me from Nicopolis. And he treats me like I’m worth something. Worth his time and energy. I guess he’s like a dad to me in all the best ways.
Do you have special powers?

Besides controlling earth and fire, I can also use Might. It’s like the Force that the Jedi use. But I’m still not very good at it. It takes a lot of training and practice. But Basil says I’ll get there eventually.

And, of course, I can fly.
Do you ever wish you were human?

Nope! The only thing I want to be is a Terrae Angeli.

I hear you have a cute neighbor. Tell us about Katie.

Katie’s great. Wicked smart and really pretty. She’s become a good friend – I guess you would say we are boyfriend/girlfriend. But she doesn’t know what I am. Sometimes I wonder if it would change how she felt about me.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself?

Dogs and small children are the only ones who can recognize us Terrae Angeli. They go nuts around us. Dogs jump all over us and kids keep trying to hug our knees! It’s totally embarrassing. Katie has this enormous Irish wolfhound named Bear that goes berserk when I go over to their house. But I love the big guy, even when he’s being insane.

Life is complicated. Life brings joy. It also brings pain. Marriage is a fragile thread. Sometimes it brings happiness. Sometimes it unravels and leads to unfaithfulness. Families are torn apart, betrayed by those they love as they search for what is missing in their lives.

In author Ellen Hopkins’s first novel for adults, Triangles, we meet three women who are dealing with drastic changes in their lives: Marissa, Holly, and Andrea. To me, Marissa’s story is the most touching. How does a woman deal with a dying child, a gay son, and a husband that’s unfaithful? Then there’s her sister, Andrea, a single mother who finds herself interested in her friend Holly’s husband. Holly, who just wanted to be “safe” is now looking for success other than being a mom. The children and teens involved, each with their own story, add to the tension in the families. Reading this novel sure makes me appreciate the calmness of my life.

Beautiful poetic verse paints a revealing picture of a side of life that brings more feelings of guilt than of satisfaction. In my little world it’s hard to imagine people who actually live like the characters in this story live. I know they do, but I’ve never thought much about it, until now. This book has opened my eyes to what can go terribly wrong in a marriage and how it effects everyone involved. The scenes are intense and leave little to the imagination as the antagonists follow their desires, giving little thought to the consequences that are sure to occur. The characters are well developed and I wanted them to find happiness, although without hurting others. A good novel brings out emotions in the reader, in my opinion. Ms. Hopkins’s story certainly does that for me. I was angry at the characters for doing such dumb things. I cried along with the characters when their hearts were breaking. This novel is definitely for adults because of the graphic scenes. If you like happy endings, you won’t find one here. You will, however, find hope, I think, and come away from the story with a new sense of why people sometimes do the things they do, at least I have. We never know the secrets individuals carry with them, the secrets they keep to themselves. Triangles is a story that will stay with you even after you’ve read the final page.

What do you do when your parakeet starts talking like your mother? A white pickup with two shaggy men inside turns up everywhere you go? Your house is broken into while you‘re at a hotel for a bird contest? Your mother is kidnapped? And that’s just the beginning.

Author Aaron Paul Lazar’s novel For the Birds is the first book in the Tall Pines Mystery Series. From the opening paragraph to the final sentence, Mr. Lazar takes the reader on a roller coaster ride with more twists and turns than a country road. It starts out simple enough. Marcella and her husband, Quinn, along with Marcella’s mother, Thelma, are on their way to a bird show with their parakeet, Ruby, who by the way is my favorite character in the story. But who is Earl Tiramisu and why does he ask so many questions about Thelma who almost drowned in the hotel pool and ended up in the hospital. (It’s too complicated to explain. You’ll have to read the story.) Enter FBI agents, secrets revealed, and Marcella and Quinn are soon on a dangerous mission to find the answers to all the questions, as well as where Thelma, who has been kidnapped, is, who kidnapped her, and why. One thing’s for sure, this story will keep you guessing, for nothing is what it seems and the people are not always who you think they are.

Even with the fatalities that occur with some bloodshed, For the Birds is a fun read, especially for mystery lovers that like to solve the mystery before the characters do. The ending to this one may surprise you. It did me. The quirky yet realistic characters and the setting in the Adirondacks make this book an enjoyable read. I can only imagine what the characters will encounter in the next book in the series.

From Nicole: Beginning in 2012, Tribute Books will become solely an ebook publisher of young adult titles.

We're looking to work with authors who are savvy with social media - those who blog, tweet and update their Facebook status on a daily basis.

Our preference is for authors who already have a book(s) published through a royalty-paying press. We want to work with those who are familiar with the ins and outs of the publishing process. We seek those who have experience having their work edited and know the effort required for successful book promotion.

There would be NO charge for authors, and those selected would receive 50% of the net retail price in royalties.

To begin, we're looking to work with 12 authors in 2012, publishing one per month.

Nicole agreed to an interview with me and kindly answered my questions.

1. Tell us a little about yourself, Nicole.

I'm 32-years-old. I've lived in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area for most of my life. I have a 9-month-old Shih-Tzu puppy named Buster. My favorite TV shows are Dexter and Breaking Bad. I love movies that originate from film festivals. I'm a fan of Italian, Mexican and Chinese food. I've been reading books since I was 4-years-old. I work from home. My daily uniform is centered around blue jeans. I wish summer was a year-long season because I detest the cold. I'm addicted to Diet Coke. I enjoy being outdoors and experiencing nature. I'm your typical Virgo - quiet, creative, detail-oriented.

2. How did you get into the publishing business?

I've spent roughly the last 12 years in the publishing world. I have a B.A. summa cum laude in English and Communications. From 1999-2004, I went from being an intern to an editorial assistant to an associate editor of a regional magazine.

In 2004, I started Tribute Books. Since that time, I've worked with dozens of authors, illustrators, photographers and editors in publishing over 30 books. Some of our books have gone on to win awards such as the Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year and the Mom's Choice Award while others were endorsed by PBS and The Thoreau Society. We've published a wide variety of genres from children's picture books to history to sports under both traditional and subsidy contracts.
In 2012, we'll embark on a new transition becoming solely an e-publisher of young adult titles. There will be no charge for the young adult authors we select to work with, and they will receive 50% of the net profits of their ebook sales in quarterly royalty payments.

3. What do you think is the best way for an author to promote her/his work?

I am a big believer in the power of social media. I even conduct monthly blog tours for outside publishers and authors in order to help them increase the online presence of a book. Book bloggers are a powerful force in the book industry. With more and more book stores closing and book review columns being cut from major newspapers, readers are depending on bloggers to help them find the books they want to read. They are turning to the internet as a reference point to fill this information gap.
In my opinion, social networking is the bread and butter of any author's promotional efforts. Without it, it's like trying to paddle upstream without a canoe. Readers want to connect with the person who wrote the book. They crave interaction with an author. Nothing beats getting a writer to comment on a blogger's book review post or getting a personalized thank you tweet from your favorite author. The days of authors being isolated from their fans is over. They're now able to build an online following and receive instant feedback for their work. They have the opportunity to take part in creating their own literary community.

4. Are you a reader also? If so, what are your favorite books?

Absolutely! I'd have to say I've been pretty taken with Lauren Oliver's work - Before I Fall and Delirium. Her ability to translate such an intensity of emotion onto the page really impressed me. Even though her books are marketed to a young adult audience, the quality of her writing is strong enough to stand on its own in comparison to any genre.

5. Do you think ebooks will eventually be more popular than print? Why or why not?

I do. Over the course of 2011, we've watched our ebook sales outpace our print sales by 2 to 1 due to the explosion in popularity of e-readers such as the Kindle, Nook and iPad. The under $5 price point of most of our e-titles and the ease of purchase and delivery surely facilitated this rapid change. I can only see this trend increasing in momentum as the price of e-readers continues to lower and more and more people start using this new technology. The industry shift is similar to what occurred in terms of music buying habits when iTunes downloads became more popular that CD purchases. There will always be a market for print books, but I think the majority of book sales will soon be electronic. People want the cheapest, quickest and easiest way to obtain their reading material.

Tales from a Disturbed Mind

This post is just a hodgepodge of my rambling brain. That’s how I’ve been all week, jumping from one thing to another, never settling anywhere for long, like a butterfly flitting from flower to flower.

The Muse Online Writers Conference has ended. It was a week of learning, sharing, meeting new people and making friends. My workshop on Vision Boarding was fun, at least for me. We shared ideas on characters, setting, and plot. And boy, the writers had lots of great thoughts.

I planned to attend some of the other workshops, but kept too busy to do so. My organization skills need improving. One thing that’s nice about an Online conference is you can attend at your convenience. You also can be wearing your sloppiest clothes and no makeup and no one will know.

I pitched my MG story and was asked for a full. Getting it ready to send, with fingers crossed they’ll offer me a contract. A couple of my friends were asked for their manuscripts by the agents they pitched to, which makes me thrilled for them. This could be their big break.

October 20 is the National Day on Writing, started three years ago, by the National Council of Teachers of English. It sounds like a lot of fun. You can publish your writing, or tell your family, friends or students, if you are a teacher, about publishing to the National Gallery of Writing. Tonight (when I'm writing this) I’m lost in the world of baseball playoffs, which has nothing to do with writing, unless a character turns out to be a baseball player in a future story. (By the time you read this, the game will be over, but there’s another one Wednesday and on and on.) The game is tied at the moment. Come to think of it, my early reader that just came out, Tumbleweed Christmas, has a girl who carries her baseball glove everywhere she goes.

Halloween will soon be here. What is your favorite memory?

I remember going to a party when I was in junior high. We dressed in costumes, of course. I was Cinderella wearing a long full dress my mother made for me. Well, we went on a scavenger hunt, and it was cold and windy. That skirt kept blowing in my face or else I was tripping over it. So much for being a graceful Cinderella. By the time we were finished with the hunt, I resembled the “before” Cinderella, before the fairy godmother turned her into a beautiful princess.

Meet Author/Illustrator Ben Rubin

Graphic novels are quite popular these days. Now I admit, I’ve read very few. That doesn’t mean I’m not interested in them. I’m simply busy with other types of stories and have never gotten around to studying this type of writing. That is until I read Author Ben Rubin’s WHEN COMES WHAT DARKLY THIEVES after Elias Canetti.

The cover consists of exotic artwork that sets the mood, at least it did for me. You see old houses, like in a rundown neighborhood, while a red bird flies overhead. There’s also what appears to be an eye, looking at you, from a fractured face. Who wouldn’t want to continue, to look inside for the meaning of the illustrations? As I turned pages, more interesting scenes presented themselves. A black and white design resembles a figure, a man, perhaps? Or it could be an animal? Or even a spaceship in the clouds? Then we see a face and the eye again, along with the shacks and more faces, fractured faces, as well as shattered glass. These pictures, to me, depict fear, sadness, and despair. You may see something entirely different in them. Sparse prose complements the drawings, letting you in on their secrets. I won’t give away any more, so you’ll have to check the book out for yourself.

Author Ben Rubin has written a graphic novel that will likely appeal to fans of this genre. The author talks directly to his readers, which makes you feel almost as though you’re there with him. And the ending … Well, you’ll find out. Enjoy the read.

Take witches, magic, and love potions, add a tangled romance along with two-headed dogs and giant serpents, and you have a magical tale that will likely leave you dreaming about weird creatures that devour their victims, if you dream at all.

In author Mette Ivie Harrison’s ya novel, TRIS AND IZZIE, Isolde’s (AKA Izzie) mother is a witch, but no one knows it. Izzie is just a normal girl. Or is she? Anyway, her best friend, Branna, needs help with love. So Izzie, of course, decides to take matters into her own hands and find true love for Branna. To do this, she makes a love potion. Things don’t work out the way she planned, however. And what about Izzie’s relationship with her boyfriend, Mark? It’s suddenly changing and Izzie doesn’t want it to. Or does she? After all, the new guy in school, Tristan, is a hottie that she can’t keep her hands off of. The lesson here, I think, is don’t mess in your best friend’s love life because you may end up discovering things you don’t want to know. Humor, well-crafted monsters, and a likeable heroine make for an interesting read.

Even with the monsters and disasters at the school, the tone of this story is light and fun. If you’re in the mood for a quick read with characters that are sometimes as confused as real teens are, I think you’ll enjoy Ms. Harrison’s TRIS AND IZZIE. Why don’t you pick up a copy and see for yourself.

Think Christmas

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN

I tried and tried to get the graphic posted. I've done it before, but today for some reason it won't show up. Just when I think I know all the answers, they change all the questions. It really is a pretty welcome to autumn. This is my favorite season. Especially this year after such a hot, dry summer. After this week's rains, the field is greening up a little. Yesterday, rain lillies were blooming in the pasture. The newspaper today showed pictures of monarch butterflies that are now migrating south for the winter. Usually we have some that feed off the wildflowers and roost in the trees as they pass through. I haven't seen any this year. No wild flowers except the lillies that only last a day or two. No water in the the pond. There are a couple of bright spots. My Texas sage that I thought would die this summer have perked up and even have a few blooms. I managed to snap pictures of several quail, a scissortail, and a young Mississppi kite. Life is good.

My son corrected me and said this is a Cooper's hawk. So what do I know? :)

While we're on the subject of animals, I recently read a book that I won in a contest (love contests) called A Buffalope's Tale, by Philip Caveney, a story about a ... buffalope, of course. From the jacket flap:

"From the bestselling Sebastian Darke stories, Max the talking buffalope - Sebastian's hairy, surly sidekick - now takes centre stage to show you how his adventures began. Told from Max's point of view, this is a story that will make you laugh and make you cry. At least it did me. I haven't read the Sebastian Darke stories, so I met the little buffalope for the first time here. Now, Max would make a very interesting pet. You'd never get bored, that's for sure.

My Review:

Have you ever thought how an event that occurred hundreds of years in the past might affect your present and even your future? Have you ever had the opportunity to spend the summer with your hero whose life was one adventure after another as he traveled all over the world? What if winning a simple contest would grant you the chance to learn more about your hero? Sounds easy enough, huh?

In author Paul Maguire’s debut novel, PROFESSOR ATLAS AND THE SUMMONING DAGGER, almost eighth-grader Tyler Gerard and his best friend, Brandon Giles, are about to find out answers to the above questions. The contest should be a cinch, right? The boys know just about everything there is to know about Professor Fielding Atlas. The professor will select two winners to accompany him to England where he’ll be studying a site where a medieval castle once stood. Well, the test is not exactly what the boys were expecting, but they put their ingenuity to work to solve each question presented to them. I’m not going to spoil the fun for you, but they do win and soon find themselves in London. Villains, time travel, a dagger, a castle, threats of being beheaded, you name it. Mr. Maguire’s novel covers just about everything. The boys and Professor Atlas get out of one mess only to find themselves in another. If it’s possible to change history, Tyler, Brandon, and the professor are the guys that can do it.

The author has written a story with plenty of action and adventure to keep you reading on into the late hours of the night. I think you’ll find yourself rooting for the boys as they encounter a host of unusual characters and obstacles, but deal with them many times like typical teen boys would do. I believe we’ll be seeing more of Professor Atlas, Tyler, and Brandon in future stories. This is a fine debut novel. I’m looking forward to more from this author. I think you will be too once you’ve read PROFESSOR ATLAS AND THE SUMMONING DAGGER.

Reading Time

Happy Monday, All.

This past week, I read Frankie's Perfect Home to three groups of children. Two of them were at the Wichita Falls Public Library for their story time. The other reading was at Hastings Books, Music, and Videos. Now, I planned to take pictures, lots of pictures. Yes, I did. I took my camera. Ready. Well, I got a few, but most of the time I simply forgot. Anyhow, here's what I have, not showing the little ones too much, of course, for their protection.

The librarian has a really neat program. Besides reading to the kids she made a cowboy. The theme of the day was Texas, to go along with my armadillo story.

Even the duck liked to hear about Frankie.

A couple of the girls decided to look at the felt armadillos on the bulletin board. The librarian had a cute program where she used armadillos to work with the kids on their colors and numbers.

At Hastings, one bright little boy looked at the book and said he never saw a blue armadillo. I laughed and said "Neither have I." So we talked about what color they really are.

The children loved the animal finger puppets I gave each of them. Unfortunately I couldn't find armadillos for them, but they liked the mixture of lions, tigers bears, etc.

I had a wonderful time. Hope the wee ones did too.

Today I'd like to introduce you to Susan Goldsmith and her debut book, Abithica. Susan earned her Bachelors Degree in Journalism from the University of Arizona. She was selected to serve as Rep. Morris K. Udall's Assistant Press Secretary and was honored by handing his resignation to the Senate Press. Later she became an Undercover Private Investigator at Pinkerton, worked as an outside Sales Rep at Dun and Bradstreet and spent five years in pharmaceutical sales.

She met husband, Bryan, in Mr. Ledezma's biology class, at age 13, setting off fireworks that still light the sky over Madera Canyon, AZ, to this day! Presently a stay-at-home mom, she stumbled across a pondering personal question after reading Thomas Moore's Care of the Soul, that being her own worst fear. Losing her husband and children was the answer, arriving while she vacuumed the living room. What if she were to be taken from them without their knowledge? What if another soul was inserted in her place? She'd look the same, but oh, what would happen then?

The question soon became an obsession, the idea of 'soul switching' was born, and the result was her first novel, Abithica

My Review:

Imagine finding yourself in one host body after another, not even knowing what you are, much less who you are. Is she some sort of parasite that lives in others’ bodies and feeds off of their lives, their loves, their hurts? This is the dilemma facing our heroine in Susan Goldsmith’s debut novel Abithica.

Ms. Goldsmith’s story begins with our character finding herself in a woman named Sydney’s body. What is her purpose for being there? What does God have in mind for her? In her previous host, she helped patch up a man and his wife’s relationship. Boy, could he kiss. You see, one of the problems our girl encounters in these bodies is feeling the emotions her host body feels yet knowing the kiss or whatever is not meant for her. What is she supposed to do for her present host, Sydney, who seems to be at odds with her mother and also is on the run from something or someone? Sound intriguing? You bet. I predict you’ll not be able to put the book down as you follow the character who has no identity of her own, just the name that is her host body. You’ll be pulled along with her as she feels the joy and sadness of a man she could love but who loves the body she’s in. She also seems to attract children. Can they see something in her that adults cannot see.

Yes, I’m asking a lot of questions because our heroine has a lot of questions. I think you’ll enjoy discovering the answers along with her. The author has written a winner. I’m looking forward to more stories from Ms. Goldsmith.

Here in Texas we've had a sweltering summer. Our temperatures have broken all time records. And we've forgotten what rain looks like. So I'm trying to think cool. What better way to remember temperatures below 100 and rain and snow than to think Christmas. Yes, it's not too early. Which of course leads me to the topic of today's post, my Christmas story that is going to the printer. Don't you just love those words?

Tumbleweed Christmas is a story about love and miracles. The book, written for early readers, is illustrated by Bridget McKenna. 4 RV Publishing LLC gave my characters the chance to show the world that miracles do exist though sometimes we have to help a little. Here's the gorgeous cover.

The race is on. Yes. The local annual Hotter Than H...... race is today. Our road is on the 50 mile route. I've been watching the riders peddle past the house. Tried to take some pictures. Murphy's law is in effect however. Low battery light came on, so I'm charging the battery. The race will be over before my camera's working again. Ah well.

This year the race will live up to its name. Temperature expected to top 100 plus again. Right now it's fairly pleasant. The race started an hour earlier than usual, I think, to allow for the heat. The 100 milers may be melting before they finish.

Any bicycle racers out there? They do have the competative racing for the serious racers.

Me? I prefer the comfort of my air conditioned house. My exercise is flexing my fingers as I type.

I recently read another debut novel that I'd like to share with you. The Pineville Heist, by Lee Chambers, makes the eighth novel I've read for my YA Debut Challenge started way last January. Only two more and I'll reach my goal of ten.

Born and raised in Canada, LEE CHAMBERS holds a post-graduate diploma in Film Production from Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK and an Advertising diploma from Sault College. He returned to Canada in 2004 after spending ten years working professionally in London and working on film and television productions for the BBC and Miramax. His short films have been screened at top festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival, with critical acclaim coming from EMPIRE and TOTAL FILM. Along with his teaching duties at Confederation College and workshop presentations at festivals around the world, Lee has also been running the Make It Short Film Project since 2005. Take a wealthy, seventeen-year-old kid with an attitude, a robbery, and cops with secrets, add missing bodies, a pretty teacher who may or may not be involved in the crime, stir, and you have an adventure story with twists and turns that will keep you guessing who the bad guys are until the end.

In Author Lee Chambers’ debut novel, The Pineville Heist, seventeen-year-old Aaron Stevens accidentally finds a backpack from PINEVILLE SAVINGS AND LOAN full of stolen money. When he hears Tremblay, Sheriff of Pineville, and Officer Carl discussing how someone got away with four to five million dollars, Aaron decides to return the money with the help of his friends. Well, the boys have good intentions, but they encounter major problems on the way to do their good deed. Soon Aaron, Mike, and Steve are running for their lives, pursued by a gunman determined to kill them. Aaron escapes to the school where more killing is going on, and a battle ensues between Aaron and one of the robbers. I’m not saying who because that would give away the story. However, the timid boy who was afraid to shoot a deer when he was a child, now faces a choice: kill or be killed. Will Aaron find the courage to not only protect himself but his teacher, Amanda, as well?

Readers that like a fast-paced action story will enjoy The Pineville Heist. If you’re a bit squeamish, there are dead bodies, gunfights, and some bloody scenes. This novel is better suited for older teens, 14 and up. I did have a problem with the change in point of view so often. I can see why Mr. Chambers wrote the story this way because so many characters are involved. Maybe space breaks would have warned the reader that we were in a new character’s thoughts. Nevertheless, The Pineville Heist is a good story about a young man who faces more challenges in life than most teens and how he deals with the changes in his life. Even though I’m not big on bodies lying around, I enjoyed watching Aaron tackle each situation the way only he could. I think you’ll enjoy the read as well. You might want to leave the lights on if you read the novel at night.

The sirens blare as the fire truck races down the street. Firefighters on their way to another fire or accident, we think, and are thankful our house is safe or our family or someone we know aren’t injured. But do we ever stop to think what being a fireman is really like. Sure, they visit schools and teach fire safety. They answer alarms for drownings, auto accidents, fires, and other things we can’t even imagine. Well, if you’ve ever wondered about or thought of becoming a firefighter there is a book out that will give you an inside look at what it’s like. You may be surprised.

Author Gary R. Ryman has written a book about three generations of firemen in his family: his father Richard Ryman, himself, and his son Mike. From battling house fires to administering aid at auto accidents, to saving babies’ lives the author takes the reader along with him and his fellow firemen. The scenes are so vivid that sometimes I could almost smell the smoke and feel the heat of a roaring blaze. The author also talks about trust among firefighters. For example, you don’t leave your partner alone in a fire. He mentions, too, that being a firefighter is a “thankless job” at times. So why does he do it? Why do others do it? For Gary Ryman it’s “the satisfaction of doing something only a small percentage of people can do--entering buildings being consumed by fire and having the skill to save lives.” Some of the calls are funny, but I’ll let you enjoy reading about those yourself. Others are sad and make you appreciate the bravery and dedications of the firefighters.

FIRE MEN, STORIES FROM THREE GENERATIONS OF A FIREFIGHTING FAMILY tells a great story about the joys and the sadness of the job. Of course, fire departments in different towns, large and small, would be a bit different. But they all have one thing in common: saving lives and property. As the wife of a retired firefighter, I recommend this book for a close look at the brave men and women who we take for granted, but who we want to be there when duty calls.

CPSIA Testing Requirements

On Monday, both the House and Senate passed an amendment to CPSIA that exempts “ordinary” children’s books, along with a few other classes of products (e.g., all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles), from the law’s testing provisions. Rest easy now, everyone. If the President signs the bill then all's cool. Wish I could say the same about the temperature. This, too, shall pass.

Remember the snow in the winter.

Yeah, it was almost as tall as the 4-foot high fence. The dog walked right over it to eat the biscuits I'd thrown out for the birds. I hated the snow then. Today, I'd bury myself in it and enjoy the coolness. Next winter I probably won't say that.

Writing for Free – A Means to an End: Visibility

I have come to the conclusion that the most time consuming aspect of writing is keeping up with all the useful information that is made available through everywhere from business sites to personal blogs. It seems everyone is offering free information. I have already spent entire days just surfing through sites and reaming ideas, strategies, tips, and so on. It really is endless.

In the writing world everyone tries to and actually needs to keep their work and names visible. Whether you’re selling books, or services, or another product, you need to reach the potential customers. Providing information is a primary means of accomplishing this. The information you provide creates an informational funnel leading readers back to your site/s.

One tool to use to create an information funnel is the blog. New blogs are popping up everyday with free tips and advice. The blog has become a great vehicle to bring you to the reader. It is an excellent way to show readers what you have to offer. The information you provide will hopefully not only draw readers, but keep them coming back for more. Using my own blog as an example, I found that if I don’t offer beneficial information, I lose followers.

Another vehicle to bring you to the reader is the free online magazines. This is where you can write and have your articles published. While you don’t get paid, you do get published. Although it doesn’t have the credibility of paying markets, it is a great way to hone your craft, expand your visibility, and establish yourself as an expert in your niche.

One more source of visibility is writing guest blogs or articles for other blogs or sites. Often the writers are looking for new and fresh content for their sites or newsletters. If the offer arises take advantage of it, or ask bloggers if they would be interested in a guest blog from you.

Every marketing teleseminar and workshop I have been to encourages writers to offer information through blogs or free online magazines. According to marketing experts the name of the game is visibility. Free information draws readers. I can confirm that this is true because I make it a point to attend all the free teleseminars and teleclasses possible. The businesses that offer this free information want to draw you there so they can sell you their services. This is understandable. It is a win-win situation; they acquire some new customers and you, whether you take advantage of their services or not, receive valuable information.

But, to what extent should a writer offer their services for free?

While taking this path of visibility it’s important to remember that submitting to free ezines or guest blogging is not just a lack of financial gain, it’s the time loss incurred while preparing these articles – this is called opportunity costs, the cost of choosing one path over another.

The best strategy is to start out offering free tips and articles until you can provide your own expert information and advice. It’s important to remember that this free information will draw readers and show them that your posts and articles are helpful and needed. Once you feel comfortable enough that the information you are providing is of substantial value you can offer it in the form of ebooks, newsletters, teleseminars, workshops, and/or other means for a fee.

You should be aware that even when you reach this point, it’s still a good idea to publish articles in the free ezines for continued visibility and as a means of drawing new readers/customers to your sites and services. And, don’t forget that while you’re providing free information you can also be submitting articles to paying markets.

In spite of the broiling weather and dried up ponds and no baby fawns that I've seen, I have many things to be thankful for. My family, my nice cool house, and friends, both Online and in person. Today, I'm happy to share the latest with you. Here's a picture of the medal for being a finalist in the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Through her fictional characters, Bryn and her abusive boyfriend, Preston, the author provides a glimpse into possible reasons people do not report what’s happening to them. Preston is popular, good looking, and Bryn thinks she’s lucky to be his girlfriend. She keeps quiet about his hitting her, until they are in an auto accident and the truth is revealed. When her father insists on pressing charges against Preston, Bryn learns just how far Preston will go to protect his reputation and his future.

Bryn’s mother and sister are away. That leaves Bryn and her father, who avoid discussing what they don’t want to talk about, to deal with what soon escalates into threats and intimidation unless they drop the charges. Can Grandmother Mim who comes to stay until Bryn's mother returns home and gives Bryn surfing lessons while helping her through the days leading up to the trial and the trial itself, a book called RL (Real Life) that tells Bryn stories about Jeshua, and Shaun, a gorgeous new guy, help Bryn overcome her distrust of boys and put her life back together?

The author has written a story that anyone who’s been in the same situation as Bryn can relate to. They’ll understand her reluctance and fear to tell on the abuser. Perhaps seeing how Bryn deals with the situation will encourage them to act. This novel would make a good supplemental reader for classrooms to let young people know they’re not alone and they need to admit the truth to stop the abuse. Also, the book would be a useful resource for school counselors when dealing with their subjects. I recommend this novel for teen readers and their parents, as well.

My story: I wore a crinoline (of sorts) when I was in high school. I went to a school dance in this formal gown that reached to my ankles. My petticoat had a hoop around the bottom. I think my mother made it. She was really good at sewing and made most of my clothes. Anyway, the fun part was that I couldn't sit down because the hoop would fly up when I did. Embarrassing. I had a good time anyway.

I've never lived in a cave but visited Carlsbad Caverns once. It was dark and scary.

I was going to have a 100 follower celebration, but one went away so there are only 99. Some day. :)

Life on Hold

This month has been a whirlwind of activity. So much is happening I'm in a daze. Well, that's nothing new for me, since my head is usually in the clouds. I am enjoying every blessed moment. CINDER AND ELLA Review

CINDERELLA is one of my favorite fairy tales. When I was a kid I’d listen to it on the radio, where actors read the parts of Cinderella and her wicked stepmother and sisters. Yes, this was before TV. Cinderella was beautiful. And the prince was … in my young imagination he was handsome and gentle and kind. I loved the ending where Cinderella and the prince lived happily ever after.

If you’re expecting a sweet romantic story like the original CINDERELLA in Author Melissa Lemon’s novel, CINDER AND ELLA, forget it. The prologue sets the reader straight in a hurry. Ms. Lemon’s story has no fairy godmother, no glass slipper, no wicked stepmother and no wicked stepsisters. Instead, the author tells the “true” story of a family consisting of a father who disappeared several years ago, a mother and four sisters: Katrina, Cinder, Ella, and Beatrice. And what a story it is. There is a handsome prince. Now, I don’t want to give anything away, but he’s, shall we say, not the prince from the original Cinderella. Cinder goes to live in the castle and does fall in love with Prince Monticello, but as for living happily ever after ... Well, I’m not saying, but you’ll be surprised at the outcome, I think. I know I was.

Trees that are linked to the lives of the characters, the sisters’ missing father, and Knight Tanner from the castle (who is in my opinion the true hero of the story) make for a read that will keep you wondering what happens next. The story has a lot of plot twists and turns, so many at times that I had to really concentrate to keep up with them all. Also, the mixed points-of-view, jumping from scene to scene sometimes felt rushed, and I wasn‘t ready to go on to the next scene yet. Of course, those are just my thoughts. There’s plenty in the novel to like: interesting characters, mysteries in the castle tower, secrets revealed, and the discovery that people are not always what they seem. Also, there are many questions to be answered. Will Ella find her father? Will Cinder and Prince Monticello get together? Will Ella and Tanner live happily ever after? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

Melissa Lemon has written a novel that should appeal to readers who love fantasy, a bit of romance, and characters that will stay with you for a while after reading the last page. Enjoy the journey and trying to solve the puzzles before the characters solve them.

Frankie is Here

July is starting out to be an awesome month. A lot of good things are happening in my world. I hope in your world too.

First, Frankie is here. The very nice UPS man delivered copies and they are gorgeous.

Even Patches is excited. She's probably wondering what that armadillo is doing in the house.

I'm going to start a new blog for my pb and early readers. Trying to think of a good name. Any ideas are welcome.

Griffin Rising Review

Griffin Rising by Darby Karchut is one of the novels I've read for the 2011 YA Debut Author Challenge started back in January. Thank you, Darby, for writing such a wonderful story. Here are my thoughts:

GRIFFIN RISING Review

By Darby Karchut

Would you like to have a guardian angel watching over you? If so, then curl up in your favorite reading spot and enter the world of Griffin, a Tiro or Terrae Angelus in training, and his Mentor Basil, Terrae Angelus. “Terrae Angeli exist only to serve as guardians to man.” They are earthbound. They have free will, like man. Their powers align to the Four Elements: Wind and Water, Earth and Fire. Like man, they also can be destroyed.

Griffin begins his training to become a Terrae Angelus under Nicopolis, a cruel Mentor who beats Griffin and finds fault with everything he does. When Griffin is thirteen earth years of age, Nicopolis accuses him of trying to ruin his status by failing all his lessons. If Nicopolis decides to end Griffin’s apprenticeship, Griffin will be kicked out of training and become a mortal. Luckily Flight Command finds another Mentor for Griffin, which is the best thing that could have happened to him. Under Basil, his new Mentor, Griffin experiences kindness and a gentle, though stern, teacher, one who doesn’t give praise often, but is serious when he does.

Author Darby Karchut’s debut novel has a little of everything: humor, suspense, and danger. Toss in young love when new neighbors with a pretty daughter Griffin’s age move into the house across the street and Ms. Karchut has written a book that will please most everyone, male and female, young and old. How can romance survive when the girl who captures Griffin’s heart doesn’t believe in guardian angels and says they remind her of “creepy stalkers?” Will Griffin and Katie be able to overcome their differences? Will Griffin win his Proelium, the battle where he becomes a Terrae Angelus? You’ll be turning pages to find the answers.

Through journal entries from Griffin, Basil, and Katie we witness their inner thoughts, adding a neat touch to the story. I wasn’t ready for this story to end. I’m happy to report that we’ll get to read more about Griffin in future books. Having a boy for the main character will appeal to male readers, but there’s plenty here for female readers too. This is a splendid first novel. I’m looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

I am delighted to host Darby Karchut, friend, teacher and fantastic author, on the release day of Griffin Rising, her debut novel for Young Adults. So pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, relax and meet this talented lady. Here's Darby.

All her life, the archetypal hero and his journey have enthralled Darby Karchut. A native of New Mexico, Darby grew up in a family that venerated books and she spent her childhood devouring one fantasy novel after another. Fascinated by mythologies from around the world, she attended the University of New Mexico, graduating with a degree in anthropology. After moving to Colorado, she then earned a Master’s in education and became a social studies teacher.

Drawing from her extensive knowledge of world cultures, she blends ancient myths with modern urban life to write stories that relate to young teens today.

Darby is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the Pikes Peak Writers Guild. She lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with her husband, where she still teaches at a local junior high school. She enjoys running, biking, and skiing the Rocky Mountains in all types of weather.

Griffin Rising is her first novel. She is currently working on the sequel, Griffin's Fire.

In Darby's own words:

Bev: Your debut novel is about a young angel in training. How did you come up with the idea for Griffin’s story?

Darby: Well, I never really thought about writing a book. But I have read loads of fantasy novels, especially young adult. One day, I came across a legend from the Middle Ages about a lower caste of guardian angels that were said to control the ancient elements of Earth, Fire, Wind and Water. A few days later, the idea of warrior angels, who lived among us while they trained their apprentices, simply slammed into my head. It combined my love of mythology with the whole master/apprentice, father/son relationship that I find very compelling. Let’s just say I wrote the book I would like to read.

Bev: Griffin Rising is the first book of a series. Can you give us a one sentence sneak peek at the second book, Griffin’s Fire.

Darby: Gosh, I don’t want to give away anything with the first book, so I’ll just say in book two, Griffin will be facing his greatest challenge yet – public high school.

Bev: If a movie was made of Griffin Rising who would you choose to play the major characters?

Darby: Liam Neeson for Basil. But I have no idea for Griffin. A little help from your readers would be much appreciated!

Bev: Do you outline a story or just let it flow?

Darby: I write a two page synopsis before I begin each book. But after that, I let the story take the bit in its teeth and run.

Bev: Describe your writing schedule.

Darby: As a junior high social studies teacher, I learned to write whenever I have a fifteen minute block of time. Lunchtime, after school, evenings, weekends. Whenever and wherever. I’m an equal opportunity writer.

Bev: Do you have a good luck charm or ritual you do when writing?

Darby: Not so much a ritual as a requirement: Since I need quiet when I write, I often wear earplugs.

Bev: Describe your writing room. Is everything in its place or it organized chaos?

Darby: Everything I need for writing is on my laptop so I can write without being dependent on a certain place. I run a lean, mean, writing machine!

Bev: If you could live in any time or place, where or when would you choose?

Darby: I’m an Anglophile, so probably England during the late Middle Ages.

Bev: Were you a reader as a child? What were your favorite books?

Darby: I come from a family of voracious readers, so I can’t remember a time I didn’t have a book in my hands. I’ve loved many a book, but the Lord of the Rings is my all-time favorite.

Bev: Do you listen to music while you write? What is your favorite music?

Darby: As I mentioned earlier, I need quiet to write. But when I do listen to music, I enjoy classical, folk, bluegrass, and modern pop. Actually, I like all music except jazz.

Meet Johnny One-Eye

Since I read mostly books for children and teens, Jerome Charyn is a new author for me. He's touring his book Johnny One-Eye, and I'm happy to be a part of it. Let me introduce Author Charyn to you.

Jerome Charyn (born May 13, 1937) is an award-winning American author. With nearly 50 published works, Charyn has earned a long-standing reputation as an inventive and prolific chronicler of real and imagined American life. Michael Chabon calls him “one of the most important writers in American literature.”

New York Newsday hailed Charyn as “a contemporary American Balzac,” and the Los Angeles Times described him as “absolutely unique among American writers.”

Since the 1964 release of Charyn’s first novel, Once Upon a Droshky, he has published 30 novels, three memoirs, eight graphic novels, two books about film, short stories, plays and works of non-fiction. Two of his memoirs were named New York Times Book of the Year. Charyn has been a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. He received the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and has been named Commander of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture.

Charyn was Distinguished Professor of Film Studies at the American University of Paris until he left teaching in 2009.

In addition to his writing and teaching, Charyn is a tournament table tennis player, once ranked in the top 10 percent of players in France. Noted novelist Don DeLillo called Charyn’s book on table tennis, Sizzling Chops & Devilish Spins, "The Sun Also Rises of ping-pong."

Charyn lives in Paris and New York City.

JOHNNY ONE-EYE, A TALE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Review

War turns lives and countries upside down. And if you’re playing both sides, you‘ll likely spend a lot of time in cellars or prison or the hold of a ship. You might even be tarred and feathered. Just ask Johnny One-Eye.

In JOHNNY ONE-EYE, A TALE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, author Jerome Charyn follows the eight years of the American Revolution in New York. Johnny Stocking, AKA Johnny One-Eye because he lost an eye in Canada with Benedict Arnold, age 17 at the beginning, is a fictional character placed in the midst of real events and participants in the war. Johnny, an orphan, suspects that Gertrude, the mistress of The Holy Ground, a bordello, and George Washington, commander in chief of the Continental Army, are his parents. So many different characters were involved in the story that parts of the book confused me and I had to refer to the list of characters at the front to see who was who. The listings were a great help.

One of my favorite parts to the novel is the vivid picture the author paints of what George Washington was like, from his physical appearance to his concern for his men and for Gert, as well as his feelings for Johnny. We see Washington, I think, as human, and not simply the great general we read about in most historical books. As for Johnny, his fears, his emotions, and what he goes through to survive show a gruesome side to the war. To me, he’s a brave young man that sometimes makes bad decisions and has to pay the consequences, much like teens of today.

The American Revolution is one of my favorite periods in history. I’ve read many books about the war, but none quite like this one. We see a different side to the war, rather than just the battles between two armies. The characters, both real and from the author’s imagination, bring the Revolution to life, with true events and imaginary ones. The language and some of the scenes are too rough for my liking and I skimmed over them. Other readers may not be offended by the openness of what goes on at The Holy Ground, but I’m not crazy about it. If you love the Revolutionary time period of our nation, you might find this novel enjoyable. I think it does show the effect war has on not only the soldiers but their wives, children, and friends. War is ugly.

But the character I enjoyed the most was the fictional Johnny One-Eye. I’m always for the underdog. I like to see someone whose life is about as bad as it can get fight back for his
beliefs. Even though he may not always win, at least he tries.

Through letters and beautiful verse author Lisa Schroeder’s new novel, THE DAY BEFORE, follows the story of Amber, a girl faced with such a situation. In Amber’s own words she calls it “the last day of my before. The day before all changes forever.” In a few but perfectly chosen words, Amber’s story unfolds. Each verse carries the reader along with Amber, as she discovers the truth about herself. Along the way she meets Cade, a boy with a story of his own. The two teens have a lot in common: he writes songs; she plays in a band. They both are also on a journey that neither looks forward to, but that they have to do. Amber and Cade spend the day together, going to the beach, getting acquainted, kissing, and perhaps falling in love. Will Amber’s after be as good as her before? Will Cade’s story have a happy ending?

THE DAY BEFORE is a story about friendship, family, hope, and of doing your best when life gets tough. The rhythm of the verses, the spare words, the language, simple yet touching, make Ms. Schroeder’s novel a must read. I enjoyed my journey with the two teens, waiting to see how their stories would turn out. I think you’ll enjoy it too. Recommended for everyone who loves a novel with characters that will make you examine your own life for those little moments of decision that affect your entire life. This is a book you’ll want to read over and over. I plan to read it again.

Review of SUNSTRUCK, by Mayra Calvani

Take a college student studying architecture, her artist boyfriend who hates her cat whether he (the boyfriend) is strung out on LSD or sober, her ex-husband and his new wife, AKA Lady Dracula, who keeps bottles of blood in the fridge. Add an atheist friend in love with a priest, a Zorro look-a-like who goes around slashing the rear ends of women wearing mini-skirts, and a mother who may just be involved in a women’s revolution against Zorro. Mix them all together, and you have a story that will make you laugh until the tears roll. You’ll also play the guessing game of who did what and why.

Author Mayra Calvani’s novel SUNSTRUCK introduces the reader to Daniella and a cast of zany characters, along with some unexpected plot twists along the way. Just when I thought I knew all the answers new questions appeared, and I discovered I knew very little. Besides her studies at the university, Daniella works at Ismael’s, her ex-husband’s, hotel for animals, which isn’t quite what it seems. But then nothing in this book is. The author switches point-of-view characters in some of the chapters, giving the reader an inside glimpse at some very disturbed minds. Ms. Calvani has a gift for describing a scene that makes the reader, at least this reader, feel like she’s there, experiencing the events along with the characters. This book looks at the world though a cast of characters that made me laugh but also made me think how sad their lives are and how glad I am that they’re fictional characters. And when an author writes characters that you care about, she’s accomplished her goal. The author has done that in this novel.

I’ve read Ms. Calvani’s picture books and her non-fiction books, but this is my first
novel of hers to read. It won’t be the last. So if you’re looking for a book to lighten your mood, to brighten your day, or to relax with, pick up a copy of SUNSTRUCK. I think you’ll be glad you did. I’d like to see a sequel because I’m curious as to what happens to Daniella and her friends.

Sometimes our dreams are so real that we have trouble separating the truth from our imaginations. And if we awaken with dirty feet, scratches and cuts, and remember a barren wasteland, then the dreams turn into a nightmare. Add a necklace that appears to be something different to each person that looks at it, a girl whose strength makes her almost invincible, and a bad guy with a mission, and you’ll find yourself reading just one more page, then another, and another unable to put the book down until you see what happens next.

Author Josephine Angelini’s debut novel, STARCROSSED, introduces us to sixteen-year-old Helen Hamilton, who lives in Nantucket with her father, Jerry. She knows nothing about her mother who ditched them when Helen was a baby. Helen has nightmares. But her dreams are the least of her problems. She “sees” things, like a white figure that vanishes and three sobbing women. At school, the mere sight of Lucas Delos and the other members of his family, new on the island, bring forth such hatred that she attacks Lucas. She doesn’t even know him, so why does she hate him? Also, she can fly. Helen soon discovers she has another power, too, that could be deadly unless she learns to control it. (No, I’m not telling. You’ll have to read the book to find out.) As Helen attempts to put together the puzzle that is her life, Lucas tells her his story, which is tied up with hers in ways she could never have imagined. Before long, Helen and Lucas are in love, a love that is doomed from the beginning.

The characters in STARCROSSED are well-developed. Like people in real life, they’re not perfect, which makes the reader care what happens to them. I could feel Helen’s pain as she learned the truth not only about herself but about her mother and father, as well. The plot moves along with plenty of action. Myths, legends, love, and twists and turns make STARCROSSED a novel that you’ll remember long after you’ve read the last words. I’m looking forward to the sequel.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Ingredients

1 package (18-1/4 ounces) French vanilla cake mix
1 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup canola oil
4 eggs
FILLING:
1 package (3 ounces) berry blue gelatin
1-1/2 cups boiling water, divided
1 cup cold water, divided
Ice cubes
1 package (3 ounces) strawberry gelatin
2/3 cup finely chopped fresh strawberries
1/4 cup fresh blueberries
FROSTING:
3/4 cup butter, softened
2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons 2% milk
1 jar (7 ounces) marshmallow creme

Directions

Line a 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan with waxed paper and grease the paper; set aside. In a large bowl, combine the first four ingredients; beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on medium for 2 minutes. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack to cool completely.
Transfer cake to a covered cake board. Cut a 5-in. x 4-in. rectangle (1/2 in. deep) in the top left corner of cake, leaving a 1/2-in. border at outside edges of cake. For red stripes, cut seven 1/2-in. wide rows across cake, about 1/2 in. deep, leaving a 1/2-in. border at outside edges of cake.
In a small bowl, dissolve berry blue gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water. Pour 1/2 cup cold water into a 2-cup measuring cup; add enough ice cubes to measure 1-1/4 cups. Stir into gelatin until slightly thickened. Scoop out and discard any remaining ice cubes. Repeat, making strawberry gelatin.
In a small bowl, combine strawberries and 1 cup strawberry gelatin. In another bowl, combine blueberries and 1 cup blue gelatin. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or just until soft-set (save remaining gelatin for another use).
Stir gelatin mixtures. Slowly pour blueberry mixture into rectangle; spoon strawberry mixture into stripes.
In a large bowl, beat butter until fluffy; beat in the confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth. Add marshmallow creme; beat until light and fluffy. Spread 1 cup over sides and top edge of cake.
Cut a small hole in the corner of pastry or plastic bag; insert a large star tip. Fill the bag with remaining frosting. Pipe frosting in between rows of strawberry gelatin and around edges of cake. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours or until gelatin is set. Yield: 15 servings.

Nutrition Facts: 1 piece equals 438 calories, 18 g fat (8 g saturated fat), 81 mg cholesterol, 363 mg sodium, 67 g carbohydrate, trace fiber, 4 g protein.

12 Tips for Maintaining a Journal Writing Practice with Tina M. Games

Welcome to day five of Tina M. Games 6-day NWFCC April Author Showcase tour as she discusses trips for maintaining journal writing.

Hi, I'm Tina M. Games, author of Journaling by the Moonlight: A Mother's Path to Self-Discovery.

Because journal writing is such a big part of my writing life, I'd like to share with you 12 tips on how you can create and maintain a comfortable journal writing practice to support your journey as a writer.

Remember, there are no hard-set rules for keeping a journal. How often you write, how much time you spend, and how rigorously you maintain a regular journaling schedule are matters of personal choice and circumstance. What seems a comfortable writing schedule for one may seem unbearably formal to another. And while an individual living alone may have hours of solitude and enormous flexibility in terms of time, a parent with small children may have very little of either. So it is of primary importance to find what works for you.

The following general guidelines, however, may help you to establish journal writing as a regular and enduring habit.
1. Allow regular writing times. 　　Find a time of day that works well for you and use this time every day. As much as possible, control interruptions during this time.
2. Create a proper writing environment. 　　If you need quiet space, try to find a time that you can write without the noise and interruption from friends and family. If the hum of the world around you is soothing rather than distracting, plan to write during a time when other people will be engaged in their own work and not looking over your shoulder.
3. Develop a centering ritual.　　 Associating journaling with another pleasurable habit can help to strengthen the routine and create an atmosphere of self-nurturing. When you are ready to write in your journal, consider pouring yourself a cup of tea or coffee. Play relaxing music. Take a moment for meditation, deep breathing, or prayer.
4. Date every entry.　　If you only establish one habit in your journal, let it be this one. Dating every entry allows you to chronologically reconstruct your journal by date. It also gives you the opportunity to observe cycles, trends and patterns. Over time, you'll begin to notice and plan your down times, your creative times, and your introspective times.
5. Prompt yourself with a routine self-reflection question:　　If you tend to have trouble starting, prompt yourself with a routine question, such as "What am I feeling right now?" or "What's on my mind?"
6. Write quickly.　　You can outsmart dreaded "journal block" by writing so fast that the Internal Critic and the Internal Censor can't catch up. Writing quickly also provides much more ready access to subconscious information, because you're not as liable to be thinking about what you're writing.
7. Tell yourself the truth.　　Your own truth is not your enemy. Don't try to talk yourself out of knowing what you know or feeling what you feel. You'll get the best results in your journal if you give yourself permission to write your own truth.
8. Write because you want to write, not because you have to.　　Don't allow journaling to become an obligation or chore. Remember not to demand more of yourself than you can give. If you have missed a day - or several days - accept that journaling, like life, is imperfect. Just write the next time you have a chance.
9. Create a positive feedback loop.　　 As you continue to use the journal as an opportunity to be with and learn about yourself, you will find that the practice gains a momentum of its own. Discovering your own hidden depths piques your curiosity and stimulates you to continue, setting up a positive feedback loop between your conscious and unconscious mind.
10. Emphasize process rather than product.　　 An important purpose of journal writing is simply expressing and recording your thoughts and feelings. Concentrate on the process of writing - keeping the flow of words going, rather than worrying about the end result. If your goal is to have a specific audience read your piece, go back to it later and edit it. You can always use your journal as the raw material for more polished writing.
11. Learn from your own experiences. 　　After just a few weeks or months of keeping a journal, go back to earlier journal entries. See how you've changed. Look for patterns and correlations between your stress levels and your health. How does stress affect your energy levels? See what helped your general mood improve by opening up journal entries that precede an increase in your mood ratings. Learn from your own experiences. Use the objectivity of time to review your life from a different perspective that you had when you wrote the journal entries.
12. Have fun!!　　Journal writing is its own reward. Once you get started, your journal will become another one of your good friends - one who is always available and who has the time to listen attentively.
