MY FAVORITE VACATION SPOT

It was really hard deciding on one. There are so many places I enjoy. I finally decided on
Charleston, SC, for various reasons. Here's what I like about Charleston.

Morris Island Lighthouse, as seen from Folly Island. Built in 1876 about 1,200 feet from the water's edge. The construction in 1889 of the jetties which protect the shipping lanes leading to Charleston Harbor altered ocean currents, resulting in the erosion of Morris Island and the destruction of many structures and historical sites. The original lighthouse was built in 1767, but destroyed during the Civil War.

A new tower was built after the war. In 1962, a new lighthouse was built in the harbor to replace Morris Island Lighthouse. Today, a Friends of the Lighthouse group is trying to restore the Morris Island tower.

Lighthouses fascinate me. I used this one in my mg story,
A PIRATE, A BLOCKADE RUNNER, AND A CAT.

Charleston is an old town, with many beautiful churches, schools, and businesses.
This is the entrance to the College of Charleston, where part of the movie "The Patriot" was filmed.

The view in the harbor of Charleston's shore line, heading toward Fort Sumter.

The Museum at Fort Sumter. If you're a history fan, especially of the Civil War,
you'll enjoy this museum.

The Fort.

I never realized how big the cannon were.

It's lopsided. Must have been a big wave. Anyway, this is what my husband enjoyed.
He even got a write up in their newspaper. If he had entered the contest, he would have won.

Another of my favorite vacation spots is Ruidoso, NM, and the horse races.
This is the at the entrance of the Museum of the Horse, a magical place for all horse lovers. Just had to show you this.

Charleston, SC has many other exciting things to see. There's Patriot Point where you'll find airplanes and ships and the first atomic submarine. I have a story about that, but won't bore you with it. Plantations and marvelous restaurants. Haunted houses and White Point Gardens. Best of all, our oldest son and his beautiful wife live in Charleston.

Now, my journey comes to an end. Thanks for letting me share one of my favorite places with you.

Happy Reading.

CASSIE AND THE WILD CAT HOST A GHOST REVIEW

As a cat lover I just had to read this book.
And now I'd like for you to meet one of the cutest cats of all times.
(After my cats, of course.)
CASSIE AND THE WILD CAT HOST A GHOST

By Pat Hatt
Illustrated by Mohiuddin Ahmed

I love this sweet cat and look at the expression on its cute little face.

CASSIE AND THE WILD CAT HOST A GHOST (Review)
By Pat Hatt
Illustrated by Mohiuddin Ahmed

First, I could not resist the cover of CASSIE AND THE WILD CAT HOST A GHOST. The expression on the cat says “You gotta read my story.” So I did.
Second, this is the first book written by Author Pat Hatt that I’ve read; it won’t be the last. The characters are priceless. Who can resist a cat with spotted fur or a cook that says his food is making the cat fat. From the very beginning I was laughing. Add the Wild Cat and a ghost, and it’s no-stop fun the rest of the way.
From the smiles on the cats’ faces to the cutest ghost I’ve ever seen, the illustrator, Mohiuddin Ahmed, captured the characters perfectly. The poetry of the author and the actions of the characters blend together beautifully. And the plot of the cats helping Boo, the ghost, to get home provides a subtle lesson.
CASSIE AND THE WILD CAT HOST A GHOST is a lovely book that would be perfect for school libraries, as well as your own.

A perfect story for young readers in your family and for older readers that enjoy a fun story and cats.

Happy Reading.

BOOK SIGNINGS AND WONDERFUL RAIN

Welcome Wednesday.
Back to normal, sort of, after the A to Z Challenge. Lots of fun.

Saturday, I had fun too. A book signing at Hastings, Books, Music and Videos. A few people stopped by and some even bought a book. I bribed the wee ones with finger puppets and small basketballs, baseballs, and soccer balls. My hand puppet, Frankie, is a hit with the kids. My biggest seller was ... are you ready for this? DARK CHOCOLATE CANDY KISSES. Yep. Chocolate is a winner every time. One girl walked by my table, eyed the chocolates and went over to the shelves where candy sold. She came back in a few minutes, a dollar bill in her hand, and asked me if the store had any candy for less than a dollar. I told her I didn't know, but my candy was free. She went running back to her mother, (yes, I only gave candy when the parents approved) then back to me and asked how many she could have. I told her five, and she went away happy. In a couple of minutes, her younger sister came over and I gave her the freebies too. I didn't make any money, but the smiles on their faces was priceless.

Even better, one of my former third-grade students was at the store and we had a nice visit. He had his father take pictures of us together so he could show them to his friends. And he bought a book for his daughter and one for himself. When a former student recognizes me, it's so much fun. It happens quite often because I taught a lot of children.

Next, I've talked about the five year drought in our area and our use of water being limited. I know many other areas are having the same problem. Our son that lives in Southern California says they need rain desperately. I say, keep praying. We had the wettest April this year that I can ever remember. May is well on it's way to being the same. The lake levels are rising. Our water usage is still restricted, but that may change later.

Our pond has been dry for five years. Take a look at it now.

These milkweed were on dry land. The pond overflowed.

The dragonflies are back.

My son has stocked the pond with fish. I wonder if the cats would like to go fishing.

Happy Reading!

THE SHADOW OF THE UNICORN II REVIEW

Monday Musings

Well, we prayed for rain. God answered. The lake levels are rising. Our pond has overflowed its banks. Our son has stocked it with fish, the way it used to be. I'll post pictures Wednesday.

Along with the good, there sometimes is the bad. It was a wild weekend. Tornado warnings, dark clouds, more rain. Warnings went out to get to your storm shelters. I sat in the closet and listened to the TV weatherman  tell what was happening. I also wondered how I'd get two cats into the closet. You know how independent cats are. Let me tell you, God answers prayers. The circulation in the clouds never touched the ground. Pictures later shown on TV were spooky. But our little town and the areas around were safe. Oklahoma did not fare so well. Some areas there have had a rough spring.

Saturday afternoon, before the weather advisories, I had a book signing. Will tell about it on Wednesday too.

But for now, I have a review to share with you. Remember the interview I did last week with Suzanne de Montigny? Today, I'm reviewing her lovely book. So relax for a few minutes and enjoy.

I think unicorns are lovely animals and this cover proves it.

The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Deception (The Shadow of the Unicorn Series Book 2) Review
By Suzanne de Montigny
Once upon a time, in a magical land, there lived magical creatures. Like most animals, whether real or magical, they wanted to live and be happy with their families. Sometimes, however, dangers threaten and creatures, animal or human, have to learn who to trust and how to face their challenges.
In Author Suzanne de Montigny’s novel THE SHADOW OF THE UNICORN II: THE DECEPTION, written for middle grade readers, we meet some of these magical animals and some not so magical humans. The book opens with the birth of Ulysses, the colt of Unicorns Icarus and Sarah. As Ulysses grows and learns the ways of his family of unicorns he also discovers secrets that he wants answered. So Ulysses and his friend Teo set out to find the truth. On the way they encounter humans and a dinosaur and get themselves into more trouble than they could ever have imagined.
Suzanne de Montigny has written a lovely story of family and bravery. The unicorns can do magical things, but they also seem real, like flesh and blood animals. They’re so likeable that I think having one of my own, not just as a pet but as a friend, since they can talk, would be great. When Ulysses faced danger, I faced it with him. Every step of the way I hoped he’d make the right decisions.
As much as I liked the first book in the series, this novel was even better. Even though it’s written for children, I think all ages will enjoy reading THE SHADOW OF THE UNICORN II: THE DECEPTION. I believe you will fall in love with the unicorns.  And who wouldn’t like a big old dinosaur from years and years ago? Also, if you haven’t read the first book, THE SHADOW OF THE UNICORM: THE LEGACY, BOOK I, what are you waiting for?

CHRYS FEY BOOK TOUR

Today I have the pleasure of hosting Chrys Fey on her book tour. I'm doing this at the library, using their WIFI again, since I still do not have Internet service. Enough of that.

Please welcome Author Chrys Fey.

Thank you, Beverly, for letting me borrow your blog for
the day to share a bit about my newest short story, Ghost of Death.

Pizza is significant in my short story, Ghost
of Death
. To find out why, you’ll have to read it for yourself. ;) But
I love to make pizza from scratch. It’s fun to do whatever you want and it’s a
great food project for kids. Being a vegetarian, I like to load on the veggies
and I tend to get creative with what ingredients I use.

10
Pizza Toppings You Probably Never Considered:

1. Broccoli
2. Zucchini
3. Yellow squash
4. Eggplant
5. Hotdogs (for kids)
6. Refried beans (for taco pizza)
7. Yellow, orange, and/or green tomatoes
8. Alfredo sauce (in place of tomato sauce)
9. Cheddar cheese (instead of or mixed with mozzarella)
10. Ranch dressing (I use this as a dip.)

QUESTION:
What’s
your favorite pizza topping(s)?

Title: Ghost of Death
Author: Chrys Fey
Genre: Supernatural/Suspense
Format: eBook Only

Page Count: 41 (short story)
Release Date: April 22nd, 2015
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Blurb:

she died. She didn’t even see the killer’s face before he or she took her life.
Wanting justice, Jolie seeks answers in the only way a ghost can...by stalking
the lead detective on the case.

Avrianna Heavenborn is determined to find the person
responsible for a young woman’s death. She gets closer to the killer’s identity
with every clue she uncovers, and Jolie is with her every step of the way.

But if they don’t solve her murder soon, Jolie will be an
earth-bound spirit forever.

Excerpt:

With the sound of her mom’s grief
wafting up to her, Jolie came to terms with her present state. I’m dead and now my mom knows it. She eyed
the door in front of her. She hadn’t yet walked through a door, but if her hand
could pass through metal then she knew she could move
through wood.
If I have to be a ghost then I’ll be a
damn good one. All across the afterlife I’ll be known as the Ghost of Death!
And I’m going to start by walking through this damn door!
            She would’ve taken a
deep breath to brace herself if she could have, so she mentally pumped herself
up instead. You can do it! Easy-peasy.
Nothing to it.
And she took a step forward. Solid matter slipped around and
through her form. On the other side, a familiar site confronted her: a black
and white bed, the bright green shag carpet in the middle of the room, and a
white desk.
Stepping up to her desk, Jolie eyed
her ancient desktop computer, the one she used before her dad gifted her with a
laptop when she announced she was accepted to the local university. Wanting to
send out the first ever tweet from the afterlife, she pushed the button to
bring the device to life, but her finger poker straight through it. Resigning
to her Twitter-less fate, she moved toward the full-length mirror hanging on
the wall. She saw nothing. Not even a shimmer in the air hinted at her
presence.
            Being
a ghost sucks!

SUZANNE DE MONTIGNY AND THE SHADOW OF THE UNICORN II

First, I must apologize to Suzanne and all her readers. This post is late, and I'm steaming angry with my Internet Provider. I've been without the Internet for four days. They say they're working on the tower. Okay. I understand. We've had storms, lightning, tornadoes. I guess lightning struck the tower. No one's fault. However, four days? That's all I'm saying.

Now to more pleasant matters.

I am excited to welcome Author Suzanne de Montigny to my blog today. Suzanne is here to tell us all about her latest novel for young readers, The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Deception (The Shadow of the Unicorn Series Book 2). As much as I enjoyed reading The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Legacy, the first book in the series, this one was even better. I’ll let Suzanne tell you all about it. Leave a comment to win an ebook edition of the novel.

Take a look at the video:

http://youtu.be/xZgQSBowrFE

Isn't this a beautiful cover? Sure makes a person want to learn more about this unicorn.

The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Deception (The Shadow of the Unicorn Series Book 2) is the second book in your series about unicorns for mg/tween readers. Why did you decide to write about unicorns? (I love them and am happy you did.)

Well…when I was a kid, I loved horses. I lived, ate, and breathed horses, but alas, never got to own one. So I wrote a novella about a unicorn for a grade six project. Then for years, carried that little booklet around with me everywhere I lived. Then, one day, I found the first four chapters of a full version I had started writing as a teen. When I read it, I exclaimed out loud, “A psychic dinosaur?” A few days later, I began writing a new version. Two weeks later, I had my first very bad draft that I kept improving upon until it was accepted for publication.

How many books will be in the series? And when can we expect to see them?

Sigh. Originally I planned to make it a trilogy. The second one, The Shadow of the Unicorn II: The Deception, was released as an e-book on St. Patrick’s Day, and I’m in the process of writing the third entitled The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Revenge. But, my unicorns are calling for a couple more books. So we’ll see…

I say “Listen to your unicorns, Suzanne." The more the better. Have you written other books or short stories?

Yes. (Rubbing my hands together and smiling wickedly.) I have this awesome fiddling mystery about a child prodigy in classical violin (Kira) growing up in a small British Columbian town. Her father’s just died and the money needed to buy her violin to complete her diploma must be used to pay expenses. Then this strange fiddler with pale blues eyes shows up at her dad’s funeral. Within days, she’s taken the town by storm with her mysterious Celtic fiddling. But when someone begins vandalizing the town, leaving dead and gutted birds as a calling card, only Kira seems to know who the culprit is.

What is your favorite way to promote your books?

Sell them in person. I find it’s the personal connection that works with kids’ books. I do a lot of school visits and book signings.

When you’re not writing, what do you like to do for fun?

I love snowboarding, cycling, and playing music.

Where can we learn more about you? Website? Blogs?

Where can we purchase your lovely books?

and

They’re also available at all major book sites like Kobo, Nook, iBooks, or MuseItUp Publishing.

Thanks, Suzanne, for sharing your story and your life with us. I’m looking forward to more work from you and wish you all the best with your writing.

Buzz About Book 1

"The Age of Akra is a riveting, well-written, and imaginative story featuring an intricate plot and stellar cast of characters that is sure to be thoroughly enjoyed by tweens, teens, and even adults who love a great science fiction tale. This is a real page-turner and I highly recommend this book to children aged 10 and older. I just loved it and to think the author has seven books planned for the series ... I'm salivating." ~ Renee, Mother Daughter Book Reviews

"What an imagination!! Absolutely fabulous. What a great read. The characters came to life so easily. Their physical descriptions have me a visual idea but their personalities evolved and developed quickly so they were my friends and heroes before very long. I cried when Mia was selected and was on the edge of my seat when it looked like Long wouldn't make it. I couldn't put it down. A very clever story with wonderful likable characters in amazing places with fascinating skills and weird animals. I went through a range is emotions with these characters where I wanted to hug them, love them, give them a good slap, protect and spend time with. I cannot wait for book 2. Highly recommend this series of books and hope they make a movie from it would be a blockbuster!!!" ~ 5 Star Review, Dannielle S., Goodreads

"Masterfully told from different viewpoints, Starchild is neither a "boy" nor "girl" book, but rather an everyone book. Struggling readers will enjoy the simple truths of the characters, and more advanced readers will delight in the journey of Mai, Long, and Akra. A journey that introduces multifaceted characters, whom I hope will make an appearance in subsequent titles in The Starchild Series, because I'm already attached to them. Even the slightest of creatures was placed in Starchild with the greatest of skill, care, and thought. Outstanding job, Ms. Taylor, and I look forward to continuing my journey through the series." ~ 5 Star Review, C. Bullard, Amazon

Book 2: The City of Souls

Amazon  |  Barnes and Noble  |  iTunes  |  The Book Depository

Buzz About Book 2

"The City of Souls is the second book in a science fiction fantasy featuring an intricate and engaging plot, well-developed characters who are faced with new challenges, a well-described setting reminiscent of Star Wars with a hint of Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones-style action and suspense. I’m in this series for the whole haul as I feel completely invested in what happens next as the prophecy continues to roll forward. I highly recommend this book as well as the series to science fiction aficionados ages 10 years and older looking for something a little different. ~ Renee, Mother Daughter Book Reviews

"The author graciously sent a signed copy of this 2nd book in her series to my daughter Emily. Emily read Vacen Taylor's first book in the Starchild series: The Age of Akra. She very much enjoyed the adventure and getting to know the characters. Emily eagerly anticipated the next book! Emily was thrilled when her copy of The City of Souls arrived and did what she could do to avoid her homework so that she could sneak and read The City of Souls. She read the book with much interest and said that she loved every bit of it. As a parent, it's a big comfort and joy to me when my kids find stories written for their enjoyment! The Starchild series captured the heart and imagination of my daughter. And she very much looks forward to book three." ~ 5 Star Review, Vonda N., Goodreads

"Ms Taylor provides masterful descriptions that don't bore the reader. Thank you. I think the writing is at its best in the action, but the character building, backstory and forewarning is all there and relevant to the overall building of good storytelling. I'm assuming the introductions to some of the other multifaceted characters will have relevance in future books. I do hope so. Overall, a great read for children who are looking for something refreshingly new and unique." ~ 5 Star Review, Kirt T., Amazon

Book 3: The Healing Stone
