BOOK SIGNINGS AND WONDERFUL RAIN

Welcome Wednesday.
Back to normal, sort of, after the A to Z Challenge. Lots of fun.

Saturday, I had fun too. A book signing at Hastings, Books, Music and Videos. A few people stopped by and some even bought a book. I bribed the wee ones with finger puppets and small basketballs, baseballs, and soccer balls. My hand puppet, Frankie, is a hit with the kids. My biggest seller was ... are you ready for this? DARK CHOCOLATE CANDY KISSES. Yep. Chocolate is a winner every time. One girl walked by my table, eyed the chocolates and went over to the shelves where candy sold. She came back in a few minutes, a dollar bill in her hand, and asked me if the store had any candy for less than a dollar. I told her I didn't know, but my candy was free. She went running back to her mother, (yes, I only gave candy when the parents approved) then back to me and asked how many she could have. I told her five, and she went away happy. In a couple of minutes, her younger sister came over and I gave her the freebies too. I didn't make any money, but the smiles on their faces was priceless.

Even better, one of my former third-grade students was at the store and we had a nice visit. He had his father take pictures of us together so he could show them to his friends. And he bought a book for his daughter and one for himself. When a former student recognizes me, it's so much fun. It happens quite often because I taught a lot of children.

Next, I've talked about the five year drought in our area and our use of water being limited. I know many other areas are having the same problem. Our son that lives in Southern California says they need rain desperately. I say, keep praying. We had the wettest April this year that I can ever remember. May is well on it's way to being the same. The lake levels are rising. Our water usage is still restricted, but that may change later.

Our pond has been dry for five years. Take a look at it now.

These milkweed were on dry land. The pond overflowed.

The dragonflies are back.

My son has stocked the pond with fish. I wonder if the cats would like to go fishing.

Happy Reading!

  2. Sounds like a fun booksigning! I sat next to a woman who had a box of magic tricks. As a kid approached, she'd say, "Take a magic trick." It was a great icebreaker. I'm going to have to find something like that for my next event!

    1. It was, Stephanie. I think little giveaways sometimes make people stop and look. They don't always buy, but you never know. It's worth a try. Good luck to you.

    1. It was, Anne Marie. A lot of people just ignored me. I smiled at them anyhow. :)

  5. It sounds as if you had a charming day despite few book sales. I'm a former teacher, and it always means a lot to me when I connect with former students. Congrats on getting some water in a drought impacted area. (We are dealing with drought in the Sacramento area -- although I'm in a wet part of Spain right now.)

    1. I did, Elizabeth. I didn't expect to sell a lot. Most people go to Hastings for music and videos. Every book that sells is one more out there. Yes, my son that lives near San Diego says it's really dry. Maybe California will be next for the rain. Pray.

  6. I am always jealous when authors talk about their fun book signings. I've only published eBooks, so no book signing yet. One day, though. :)

I love dragonflies and adore that picture. Their blue is so pretty!

    1. I sell more books for young children than teens at signings, Chrys. I don't know if that means teens read ebooks more or what. I made post cards for the two books I have that are only ebooks and give them out. Don't know if it helps sales or not. Good luck on your "one day." Maybe soon. :)
Thanks. Dragonflies are lovely and I'm so happy we have them again.

  8. It's wonderful that a former student recognized you - even nicer he took pics and bought books! I'm sure the little chocolate-eating girls will have happy thoughts when they think about you. Yay for rain and the pond coming to life again. It looks great!!

    1. It is wonderful, Lexa. I guess I haven't changed that much from when I was teaching. More wrinkles, but I see students I had most everywhere I go. They usually know me. The girls really were cute. Our pond is lovely now. Son even put some fish in it.

  10. What wonderful news about the rain! The pond is looking great! I will keep hoping for more rain your way.

The book signing sounds like such fun. I think it is awesome that you were able to catch up with a former student. Glad you sold some books and had such a great time. :)

    1. Thanks, Jess. We've had great rains, but too much now. Some areas are flooding and people are being evacuated from their homes. Now we're praying for the rain to slow down, have a break in between. The lakes are filling up, which is good. I live on higher ground which is also good.
I did have a super day at the signing. Wish I'd sold a few more books, but I'm happy for the ones I sold.

    1. Thanks, Media. We've had the rain, oh yes. Now there's flooding and some people have had to evacuate their homes. Thank heavens I live on a higher area.
The signing was lots of fun. I enjoy meeting children. :)
