COVER REVEAL GIDEON'S SPEAR

Here it is, folks. The long awaited cover for GIDEON'S SPEAR, the sequel to FINN FINNEGAN. All I can say is "WOW!"

This just says there's good stuff inside, don't you think?

Gideon’s Spear
(The Adventures of Finn MacCullen #2)

For Finn MacCullen, it’s time to Irish up.

With a shout, Finn held the spear aloft. “Come along, ye manky beasties,” he yelled, throwing every bit of Gideon-ness he could into his voice. “I’ve a wee point to share with ye!” Gripping the end of the shaft in both hands, he swung it around and around over his head, creating a whistling sound. “Faugh a ballagh!”

“The Spear!” Goblin voices screeched in panic. “The Spear of the Tuatha De Danaan!”
“Yeah, you got that right!” Finn yelled back.

When a power-crazed sorceress and the neighborhood pack of beast-like goblins team up and threaten both his master and his friends, thirteen-year-old Finn (not Finnegan) MacCullen does the only thing an apprentice monster hunter can do: he takes the fight to the enemy.

And woe to the foe he meets along the way.

Praise
for
Finn Finnegan
(Book One of The Adventures of Finn MacCullen)

“Overall, a great choice for adventure-loving readers who prefer their battle scenes with a hefty dose of ancient weaponry, ground-fighting skills, and just a touch of magic." --School Library Journal

"If Lloyd Alexander had written The Ranger's Apprentice, the result might have been something like Finn Finnegan. Fantastic!" --Mike Mullin, author of Ashfall and Ashen Winter

"Finn Finnegan brings classic adventure into a modern day setting for a great read.”

RIDE OF A LIFETIME REVIEW

Happy Monday to you. Today, I'm delighted to tell you about another great ebook I just read. Penny Estelle's ebook, RIDE OF A LIFETIME, Book 2 of the Wickware Sagas, deals with bullies and history, an interesting combination.

The cover sold me. How about you?

Synopsis:
Jim Abernathy is the new kid at Langdon Middle School - and a bully.

His bullying is tested in Miss Wickware’s history class. Everyone must draw historical subjects out of a box and present oral reports on whom or what they have drawn. Jim draws Sybil Ludington. “Great, a woman. Real exciting!”

Jim’s ideas about women in history take a whole new turn when he walks out of class and into the Eighteenth Century and the life of Sybil Ludington.

My Review:

RIDE OF A LIFETIME

By Penny Estelle

Take a new kid in class with an attitude, add a history teacher with an assignment that turns out quite different than the new kid expects, mix, and you end up with a delightful story of a bully that learns more than history.

In Author Penny Estelle’s MG Time Travel, RIDE OF A LIFETIME, James (Jim) Abernathy, new kid at Langdon Middle School, shows he’s a bully the minute he steps into the classroom for the first time. He doesn’t know the teacher, Miss Wickware, though, who is anything but your normal seventh and eighth grade history teacher. She knows how to deal with a bully as well as teach him a history lesson. The class is studying the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and she assigns the students oral reports. Jim draws the name Sybil Ludington, a girl of all things. He may think girls can’t do anything, but what happens next will change Jim’s life and his attitude.

RIDE OF A LIFETIME is a great story for history lovers, kids that are being bullied and perhaps even the bullies, and for readers that like a good story with characters they can relate to. Even though I read a lot of historical novels, Penny Estelle’s book taught me a few facts about the time period that I did not know. I recommend this story for middle school libraries and classrooms to discuss bullying and ways to prevent it, along with the historical aspects. Of course you’ll want a copy for your own library too. The story is short and easy to read and well worth your time.

THE YOUNGER DAYS REVIEW

Travel back in history with me and meet a family in 1870s America, a time of healing, forgiving and forgetting after the American Civil War.

THE YOUNGER DAYS

by Mike Hays

My Review

Sometimes a son is exactly like his father. Other times a son seems to have nothing in common with his father except for the same name. Eleven-year-old William Smyth, Jr., AKA Boy Smyth is embarrassed by his father. Why does his pa make the sign of the cross at the big stone at the gate to their farmhouse where he had carved words from the book of Jeremiah? And why does Pa argue with the townspeople that the James-Younger Gang members are just thieves when most everyone else in town considers them heroes?

THE YOUNGER DAYS, a MG/Tween historical eBook novella by Author Mike Hays, set in 1874, ten years after the end of the Civil War, is a story of secrets and truth, mistakes and forgiveness. When two riders, one of them badly wounded, show up at the Smyth’s farmhouse one evening, Boy Smyth’s courage and also his faith in his father are severely tested. His mother also has a surprise or two for her son. When family secrets are revealed, will they bring the Smyth family closer together, or will they split them apart?

The author has written a story that will appeal to history lovers (like me), as well as to fathers and sons that may see each other in a new way, the way Boy and Pa do when the truth is finally revealed. And don’t forget Ma. She’s a spunky woman who gives us a look at the courage of a woman in the 1800s, willing to risk her life for her family. I don’t know what grades study the 1800s and Civil War, but school libraries and classrooms should have copies for their eReaders of THE YOUNGER DAYS to supplement their lessons on the time period. Of course, your own private library needs a copy too. A nice addition to historical literature blending fiction and history.

MEET ACE HANSEN, CREATOR OF OUTRAGEOUS FICTION FOR KIDS

Do I have a treat for you today? You bet. You're about to meet  Ace Hansen and ... well, that's all I'm saying right now. So give a hardy welcome to Ace. (Clap, clap.)

I'M ACE! MS. BEVERLY ASKED ME SOME PRETTY PERSONAL QUESTIONS. I POLITELY ANSWERED THEM.

INTERVIEW WITH ACE HANSEN

Bev: Hi, Ace. Welcome to my blog. Please tell us about yourself and how you became a writer.
Ace: On my planet, there isn’t always a whole lot of action, so I traveled to Earth to observe your little ones for a spell. I found them gut-explodingly funny, so I decided to write a story to amuse them as a return of favor for the many laughs they’ve all given me.

Bev: When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Ace: Who says I’m not still a child. Do I have wrinkles? ***runs to check in the nearest mirror*** Phew. When I was littler, I wanted to become a healer of chazacs and trobins—the most popular pets on my planet. But then I got bit by a vicious chazac and said, “Forget that!”
Bev: Twitter your newest release in 140 characters or less.
Ace: The world is farting green! Who will stop the green gas crisis?

Bev: How did you come up with the idea for your latest book and were there any glitches along the way?
Ace: When I first got to Earth, I saw a TV commercial where a grown human exhaled green breath. I found this very curious since on my planet, green gas comes out the other end. I soon discovered that Earthlings emit invisible gas and it got me wondering what would happen if one day you started farting green like us aliens. The only glitch happened when I discovered that some of you grown-up Earthlings don’t think it’s proper to talk about emissions and are offended by the use of the “f” word that most of you use to describe those emissions. I was shocked! But eventually I found some grown-up Earthlings who think green farts are funny and they decided to share my story with everyone on Earth. I love that group of grown-ups. ^_^

Bev: You’re shipwrecked on a deserted island. What character from a book other than yours would you want to be stranded there with you? Why?
Ace: Willy Wonka. Cause he’s got all kinds of fabulous candy!

Bev: If we peeked inside your closet, what would we see?
Ace: Gobs and gobs of empty gummy worm bags. It’s the saddest thing on Earth! Could you do something about that? Please!

Bev: Tell us your favorites:
Movie: Men in Black. Love the pug.
Actor: ET. I’m so in love. Dreamiest hands. Don’t you think?
Actress: Sigourney Weaver, ‘cause she got rid of that nasty Alien that was giving the rest of us a bad name.
Book: Aliens on Vacation by Clete Barrett Smith cause I met him and he’s cool, and well, I’m all about going on vacation!
Singer or Group: Sting.I’m an alien. I’m a legal alien. . .” ***dances around the room***

Coffee or tea?
Ace: Caterpillar juice

Bev: Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter?
Ace: Summer in Death Valley, California. People, your planet is COLD!!! And you complain about global warming. Sheesh!

Bev: If you could have super powers what would you wish for?
Ace: The power to make all you Earthlings laugh and smile more.

Bev: If you could choose to live in another time, would you prefer the past or the future?
Ace: Future. You all have some catching up to do.

Bev: Are you working on any new books now? Tell us about them.
Ace: As soon as I get my time travel machine up and working again, I’ll be able to research the story I’m eager to write next.

Bev: Where can your fans learn more about you?

Ace: Not my gummy worms, if that’s what you’re asking. But my eccentric host, Angelina Hansen, is giving them away on her blog if you get there before July 26th.

TEX, THE WITCH BOY Review

Hello, Monday. I hope everyone had a pleasant weekend. Today, I'd like to share one of the latest books I've read with you, a YA Paranormal Thriller.

TEX, THE WITCH BOY

by Stuart R. West

Doesn't the cover just say, "Read Me?"

My Review

Guys are not witches. Guys are warlocks or wizards. Aren’t they? Well, if you’re Richard “Tex” McKenna, you take after your mother and are a witch, even though you’re a guy. So what does a fellow do when he learns the truth about himself?

In Author Stuart R. West’s YA Novel, TEX, THE WITCH BOY, fifteen-year-old Tex has to deal not only with his heritage from his mother, who recently died, but with the football bullies in his school as well. When one of the bullies is found murdered, Tex becomes a suspect. To learn the truth about who killed the boy, Tex needs more help than his father can provide so he consults Mickey, a friend of his late mother’s, who is also a witch. I’m not going to give away the plot, but a lot happens in this story. Add Olivia, the girl who likes Tex, and my favorite character, a couple more dead boys, and you have a mystery that Tex and his friends must solve before more victims are discovered. When Tex conjures up a spell to identify the guilty party, things go haywire, and he wishes he’d let well enough alone.

TEX, THE WITCH BOY is a fast action story that will keep you guessing who the bad guy(s) are. I kind of suspected, but wasn’t sure until the end. The characters are well developed, each with his/her own personality. The author has written a story about family, friends, bullies, and what happens when bullying goes too far and ruins the lives of others. Recommended for tweens, teens, parents, and teachers, both the bullied and the bullies, who might just see the harm they’re doing and how it affects them all.

THE OTHER MARLOWE GIRL Review

It's Friday, already? Where did the week to go? I'd like to start your weekend with a new review, THE OTHER MARLOWE GIRL, by Beth Fred. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, relax, and enjoy.

THE OTHER MARLOWE GIRL Review

By Beth Fred

Some sisters love each other. Some sisters hate each other. Some sisters are jealous of one another. Some sisters don’t understand one another. Yes, having a sister can be complicated, especially if that sister is perfect while you’re totally the opposite and everything you do turns into a disaster.

THE OTHER MARLOWE GIRL, by Author Beth Fred, is the story of Kammy and her journey to discover who she really is. Kammy needs money and she needs it badly. She balks though at the things she has to do to get the money. Enter the handsome Enrique, who seems to take a liking to Kammy, but who she knows would never care for a girl like her except for one thing. Not only must Kammy deal with the drug dealer who may kill her if she doesn’t pay up and the gorgeous hunk that she can’t help falling for even though she knows a relationship between them is hopeless, she has to deal with her sister, Tiffany, and her husband, who hates Kammy. Can her life get any worse? Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out.

Author Beth Fred has created real-life characters that are far from perfect, living in a world that sometimes confuses them and how they deal with each situation, good or bad, they face. Misunderstandings, romance, family, and the importance of honesty blend together to make a quick read about a woman who thinks she can do nothing right and a man who sets out to prove her wrong. I recommend this short story for readers who love a good romance and for those that enjoy meeting a family that might be a lot like their own.

GHOSTLY SUMMONS VIRTUAL BOOK TOUR

Today I am delighted to host John A. Karr on his virtual tour for his novel GHOSTLY SUMMONS.

Ghostly Summons Book Summary:

Lars Kelsen doesn’t believe in psychic phenomenon. To him, visions of murder victims are a form of mental illness. Once they begin, options are limited; he can try to ignore them or deal with them by exposing a killer. Only the latter provides any semblance of peace. Temporarily, anyway. Five years into his new life as a programmer, Kelsen—ex-crime beat reporter with a penance he can never fully satisfy—sees a victim.

In person. Upright. Staring.

Typical of such past "Visits" as he calls them, he doesn’t welcome this one. The nude form of a beautiful millionairess in his cubicle means murder has come to the vacation haven known as North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It means he’ll have to go places he'd rather avoid. See things he'll wish he hadn’t. Do things that don't come naturally, like in-your-face confrontation and bending the law. Actually, breaking the law ... but with good intent. It also means dealing with one very attractive county coroner, who pushes his buttons in a not entirely unwelcome way.

So begins Kelsen's return to investigative reporting—complete with attempts on his life, fights, deception, and all the technological tricks, such as GPS and computer hacking, at his disposal. And maybe even finding a new love interest.

GHOSTLY SUMMONS Review

By John A. Karr

What if apparitions or ghosts of people that are victims of murders that have not been solved keep appearing to you? Are they real or just your imagination? What do they want from you if they are real, or as real as dead people can be?

In Author John A. Karr’s novel, GHOSTLY SUMMONS, crime reporter Lars Kelsen has Visitors (with a capitol V), not live ones either. Ghostly visions are not his only problem though. While pursuing the truth about the death of wealthy Jeanette Broughton, who first appeared to Lars as a Visitor, he faces tough guys, gets beat up more than once, and even becomes the target of someone that apparently wants him dead. Why? Is he close to finding Jeanette’s murderer? Several suspects are possible. Perhaps he’s making the guilty one uncomfortable. If you like a book that will keep you guessing who done it, then you’ll enjoy following along with Lars as he stops at nothing to solve the crime so Jeanette can rest in peace.

In addition to adventure, a mystery, and a crew of suspicious characters, the author gives the reader a bit of history of the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island and of Sir Francis Drake. To me, this slowed down the pace of the novel and the plot when I was more interested in discovering which of the suspects killed her and the reason why. It could just be me, of course. I have to admit my favorite character in the story is Hooper, Lars’ dog, that won my heart. The author paints a vivid picture of the emotional effect seeing the ghost of Jeanette has on Lars, and we also can sympathize with him in flashbacks of the death of his young son. Good descriptions of the setting and the characters’ actions place the reader in the story. I recommend GHOSTLY SUMMONS for mystery and adventure lovers and for those that like a touch of history in a story.
